I'm trying to figure out the timing on a 79 model 302 that is in an 86 model stang. Turning the dist counter clockwise, I can get as far as 10 btc. I've been looking at ignition systems (dist, coil etc.) on the internet. A lot of the ones that I have seen, have a (looks like) an electric choke on the side. I'm assuming that it is for vacuum advance. Is this necessary? My dist now does not have this (May be the reason that it is running poorly) Also what is the optimal timing setting?

Thanks

Are running a carb or EFI? If u are running a carb one from a 79-84 non-roller motor should work. The thing on the side is for timing advance. U need that for it to run right.

Yea it's a carb. Edelbrock 1405. I ve got another dist. that is from a 79 that has the advance on it. Should I be aware of anything before I just swap them over?

Thanks

Make sure your timing mark is at TDC when you remove it so you can put it back in the right place. Oh! And don't drop the hold down bolt into the engine!

When u set the timing set it w/ the vacumm line off. Then connected when it is set and u should be ready to roll.

Well, I swapped my 91 over to carb 2 years ago and could never get my vacuum advance to work. The vacuum port on the holley avengers is apparently not drilled right and gives manifold vacuum so it's crazy detonation if I connect the vacuum hose.

So I've been driving around on only mechanical advance and lemme tell ya, it's just fine. Dont try to pass in 5th gear at 1200 rpms or you will have no power but otherwise, if the rpms are like 1800 or above, you have enough mechanical advance to get the job done.
