I was just wondering...if you stand behind the car when it's idleing, do you hear a whine? I hear one that kind of blends in with the exhaust and I was just wondering if our fuel pumps are supposed to sound like that?

I think so .... at least mine does a little bit. My old '95 had a Walbro that whined as well. It's nothing loud at all, though. The only way I really hear it is if I tell myself to listen to it, lol.

The stock and lower volume pumps tend to whine just a bit - you'll have to be close to the tank to hear it... your higher volume pumps (aka my Walbro 255lph) will be quite audible.

As the stock pump goes out they will usually start getting louder and louder.

Yup. Its normal, but it shouldn't be loud enough for it to be annoying. You should just barely be able to hear it from inside the cab.

With our car completely gutted, you can hear a quite whine as it primes before startup, beyond that you won't hear a thing once it's running.

By gutted, I mean there's no soundproofing, interior.

The "in-car" test sounds the best to me. Like was said .... you should hear it very well when it is priming. Once started, you should only hear it VERY faintly.

Wes and Justin's (et al) thoughts are the same as my observations.

On the 94 and the vert, I can hear it if I put my head down by the bumper with the car idling (aftermarket H on both, Flowpath catback on one, 2 Chambers on the other). Once I stand-up, I really cant hear it and certainly once inside the car, I can't hear it.

Like Wes said, they should have a nice 'machine-like' hum. They do start to sound scalded (varying pitch and unsmooth) when on the outs.

On my previous mustang, the pump whined a lot, it was like a 'jet' flying by. well, maybe not that much but you could hear it more than the exhaust. Found out it was a big fuel pump, the previous owner ran nitrous. I have the 190 and can barely hear it, so it's normal.

top up barely hear whine, top down = loud whine. but that's ok. whine = fuel pump is working

I have a Walbro 255 and don't hear any notable whine

whatever pump was in the car before whined like hell. but now i have a 255 i don't even hear it prime, it's quiet

HOLY **** MAN... i can hear mine whine from like 10 ft away... and in the drive seat... its bad
