Does 1/4" NPT = -6AN

No. The thread size and pitch may be similar size but the NPT is a tapered thread that seals by "interference fit".
AN {Army/Navy I think} is a straight thread that requires a seat to seal. I'm not positive but I think the seat angle is 45 degrees on an AN fitting. It's been a few years since I've sold hydraulic power parts! :D

The flare angle for AN and hydraulic fittings is 37 degrees. Don't try to cheat and use a 45 degree automotive/plumbing flaring tool or you'll get leaks.

Any industrial supply store will have a 37 degree flaring tool for sale. They tend to be somewhat expensive - $75 or more

The dash number after the AN part number is the size in 1/16" of an inch. A -6 is 6/16", a -4 is 4/16".
