Does Mobil 1 oil go bad?

If I wanted to know how good an oil is, especially in the 4.6, than I would go ask the cab companies in New York City. If you really want to test an oil than that would be the best testing grounds, hands down. The cab drivers drive their cars a lot harder than 99.999% of any other car owner in the world. I wonder what oil and filter they use and how often they change them.

By the way, I just saw an article in Hot Rod Magizine (I think it was Hot Rod) about an oil filter that you reuse, kind of like K&N air filters. You just take the element out, clean it and reuse. Supposedly it does a really good job and in some cases a better job than regular filters. It cost was about $200. Has anyone heard about this, just curious.

I bet the oil companies love you! Those are standards from like 60 years ago. There have been many advancements in motor oil since then so there really is no need to change it that soon. I'm more concerned about the filter then the oil. My mechanic suggests 5,000 miles or 5 months on normally operated cars. The dealership will never tell you this and neither will any oil company.

People say you can re-use an oil filter 2 or 3 more times as well before you need to replace that....you telling me you do that too? Hey do what you want. I like to take GREAT care of my car and engine, and every 3k for me is a fully synthetic oil change and a Mobil 1 filter.

I know people who change their oil every 800-1,000 miles. Now i think THAT is a bit excessive. But 5k oil changes? I've done that ONCE in my last 1998 GT (also using mobil 1 full synth), and haven't done that since. 3k on the dot is when i change it :) ...or every 3 months, but my car is a daily driver so the 3k miles comes much faster.

And for the record, i do all the work to my car myself, and of course that includes oil changes.

This thread is ridiculous. UOA's and TBN's don't lie. Changing Mobil 1 after 3k has been shown repeatedly (read hundreds of times) on BITOG UOA's to be a waste.

sure you can go a little more than 3k. but these 15k and 20k oil changes are horrible for your car. 99 percent of motor failures we see in my shop is due to people changing there oil 10k + miles. i don't care what kind of tests BITOG runs.. I have seen the inside of these motors that go without oil changes. maybe that 15k plus oil stuff works in the south where it's warmer and there is not as much of climate change day to day. but it don't work in new england where you might see 10 degrees at night and 40 + in the same day

i will admit i cannot back up what i am saying with fancy tests, i am just telling you what i have seen working in the feild.

i will listen to MITFG ( mike is the ford guy) and continue to follow my own advice.

i am getting sick of saying this. oil changes are cheap and we ( the shops) either loose money or just about break even. but we make a TON on installing engines.

Ok this is interesting. i did a bunch of reading on amsoil and talked about it with someone at ford engeenering that i know. now what i did notice is people i have seen doing the extened serivace oil changes are using normal oil not meant for it with a conventional oil filter left on the whole time..

if the directions are followed using the same quality oil for a year is possible. but if you read the directions it requires oil meant for 25K+ miles with the filters they want you to use changed every 5k. now THAT i can see working and i may try that out on my car at some point.

but leaving the same conventional filter on and not toping off every 5k miles is heading for disaster.
