doing a 5-speed swap,will 4 cyl. tranny work in 5.0

ok, for starters the pedal assembly remove the drivers seat, for ease of installation, along with the steering column. i believe there are 4 bolts on the firewall, and another one on the top. remove throttle cable and brake light switch. remove pedals. next put in the new assembly, and remember to use the right hole with the clutch cable, and also remember that the clutch assembly ratchets, so u can use this to ur advantage when installing the cable.

next you will need a flywheel, and one matched for ur engine, older are internally bananced, while late models are external. take the flywheel to a machine shop and have it cut, and if they know ask them to be sure its the right flywheel.

u will have to hot wire the neutral saftey switch, which can be dangerous, but i prefer it if u know ur car's in neutral.

you will need a double hump crossmember and tranny mount.

as for a t-45, luckily i had a few t-5's at hand, but i know a 4-cyl tranny will work if u have the right pilot bearing..... i believe a smaller one but not sure

it can be done but the pilot bearing is the problem you will run into , my friend took a 4 cyl one and V8 pilot bearing to a machine shop and had a solid aluminum pilot bushing made using the measurements from both , and it held up under some 7.50 eighth mile passes like that for a whole season .....it eventually bent the output shaft ......

how could it bend the output shaft..that doesnt make sense..

Yes you can use a 4cylinder T-5 with a 5.0 engine. The diameter of the input shaft is smaller for a 4 cylinder T-5. You can find an old ranger pilot bearing that works or you can just use the 5.0 pilot bearing. I ran one in my car with the stock 5.0 pilot bearing for over 2 years with no problems. Eventually you can wear the input shaft and/or the bearing though.

Use BCA 202-SS or 14672 bearing from Advance Auto, AutoZone, or wherever. They both measures .5906 ID and 1.378 OD. and cost about $15

4 cyl trannys are basically the same as the v8 but like being stated above the pilot bearing. Personally what i would do is to buy pilot bushing for both and get the O.D of the V8 bearing and get a brass unversal bushing and take the both to the local machine shop and have the bushing turned to the O.D of the v8 bearing and drilled to the O.D of the 4 cyl bearing to where its a press fit.

Why do that over a roller bearing? You'd have more invested in getting it machined than you would in buying the bearing, and you'd have more friction. I could understand if you're doing it for exact tolerances and it's not a big deal to replace with a clutch, but it just seemed odd to prefer a bushing over a bearing.
