Electrical Foxbody wiring harness 2.3 to v8 swap

I know the 4cyl to v8 swap has been discussed over and over again i know what needs to be swapped over to properly swap the cars that informations is widely available. I also know this would be easier if i had matching year cars to do the swap but it doesnt always work out like that.

I have an 89 gt car 5.0 with t5 solid running and driving car great powerplant rusted horribly door posts floors whole front end rusted out and previously replaced car was in a major accident forsure at some point not worth saving.
I just purchased a very clean 93 lx hatch as close to rust free as a 33 year old car can get in my mind two minor rust spots still in the surface rust stage i plan to treat before they become major.

That being said im aware the 89 engine harness is incompatible with the 93 dash harness. My question is would the dash harmess from the 89 dash be compatible with the 93 dash? I dont mind swapping the harnesses if it means i dont have to source an over priced 30 year old engine harness or bite the bullet on a term x holley ecu n harness.

Pulling the dash would be a good excuse to replace heater core and ac evaporator core as i live in Florida and ac is basically a requirement during the summer.

Is it forsure 100% that the 89 cluster cant fit or cant be made to fit? Im not looking to stay with either stock cluster forever, id like the v8 cluster to fit in for now but if i have to use factory 4cyl untill i can get a digital dash thats fine to… i dont mind buying a wiring diagram and doing some repining if need be.

Not sure if in Florida you would need to keep the airbag so be sure about that.

I know people have put tilt columns in airbag cars. I believe they put the tilt cluster and bezel in them. It’s been discussed on here a few times.

Are we talking about the dash in terms of wiring? Or in terms of the physical dash?

Yes, you can install a 90-93 dash into an 87-89 car. You can either just swap the plastic skin off the dash frame and swap it, or you can swap the dash and metal frame completely. You do need to swap the harnesses though. Easiest method is to pull the dash skin, pull the frame/wiring. Swap the wiring. Install the frame wiring back in, and then install the dash skin in place. You do need to use the newer 90-93 HVAC controls but they will swap in with no trouble.

You can use your original cluster, gauge pod, tilt column, etc.

Here's a 1990 complete interior in my '88. Original cluster, wiring, tilt column, etc.

EDIT: althogh if i read further into this, looks like you want to put the 1987 wiring into the 1993 body? Certainly could be done, but you will need to move ALL of it as there is no cross compatible wiring outside a few minor subharnesses. 1990 was a major year for Ford in terms of rewiring these cars, so 87-89 tends to be one compatible block and 90-93 is mostly compatible. There are a few smaller compatibility issues within that range.

Beautiful car very tasteful! I see sounds like in my case the path of least resistance is just going to be leave the 93 interior and dash harness in and do a carb swap since its 4cyl from factory fuel lines gotta get changed anyway donor car is very rusty and i would need to buy new lines i can just carb swap and run an lines instead have wanted a 351 for quite some time looking at a low mile stock 351w roller motor running for $650 throw a carb on that and run it stock till the budget enlarges for some heads and a cam. Sell off all the extra bits from the donor and the 5.0 motor make back my money‍♂️

I appreciate all the information definitely helping me to make my decisions not feeling like sourcing a 92-93 harness for way more than its worth makes sense this isnt an all orginal factory showcar just a ratty no rust street car. Other option i see is a term x but ill spend 1400 on that when i could get a carburetor and a 351 for that $1400 may even be able to get the extra bits for that much too throttle cable fuel pump fuel lines ect

Sorry to go back on this, when you say all of the harness, do you literally mean if i want to put the 89 dash and engine harness i would need to swap all of the interior body harness into my 93? Looking deeper into this my 89 interior is in far far better shape and im heavily thinking it may be in my beat interest to swap it all in again

Yes. All of it. A lot changed in that 1989/1990 transition in terms of wiring.

There might be a handful of smaller subharnesses that are the same, but the main harnesses are different. For example, in 1989, the wiring for the fuel pump relay is under the drivers seat. In 1993, it's under the hood on the pass side. How those wires get to/from the relay to the pump also changed. So unless you want to spend hours with wiring diagrams, it's pretty much an all or nothing wiring swap.

If you are going to swap out the entire interior a really cheap but nice thing to do is clean the carpet. Lots of ways to do it but if you have ever thought about doing it this would be the time.

Im right there with you i love the red interior and always liked the way black carpet with red interior look figuring never a better time to pick up some carpet, how do we feel about the mass backed carpet worth the extra $100 i have no experience buying carpet. On the snowball topic im also planning to refresh all my interior panels with some fresh red make them all match for the first time since ive had the car the donor has been mine for 8 years now was my first car paid $500 for it and drove it home lol
