So there I was.....

I'm still working on stripping down this 94 rear end to fix up and go into my car (some of you are already aware of the project). A couple of weeks ago (on a warm day) I was taking the cover off and the top bolt was so corroded that it snapped off. Well, today I got back to it and first order of business was to drill that bolt out. I put heat on the housing form the front while I started with a tap and small bit from the back. Once the thing was big enough for an easy out, I put it in and tried backing it out. You all know how well those work (I don't even know why they make the damned things). After a couple of failed attempts, I resolved myself to fact that I was going to end up drilling it larger and using a heli-coil so my onle concern was to stay centered and not make an oval of the hole. Sure as zhit, the bit shot throughthe bottom of the bolt and got stuck. The drill was just spinning around the bit. Tightened the crap out of the keyless chuck, put the drill on high torque and backed it out to find this:

I think I missed my calling. I should have been a machinist. LOL Bolt threads in perfectly. Didn't bugger up the threads one little bit!

Now I've got these bolt threads stuck on my drill bit but hey.... that's what tools are for!

One shot in a million - kind of like getting a really bright second lieutenant as your aircraft commander.

I couldnt imagine working for some the morons I encounter in my classes, just becuase mommie and daddie paid for your education doesnt mean you should be an officer. Brings back wonderful memories of enlisted life...
