Not muffled but not blasting loud either..
Loud enough to hear it without having to think about it...... If that makes sense. Lol

I'm going to modify mine to play AC/DC Hells Bells instead of that annoying chime lol .Did the fix on mine today also and I’ll echo this. You can hear it and it’s clear, but not super loud.
Not a bad idea , I am just so use to hearing it all the time, not the same without it lolI threw mine in a box a long time ago.
