I was just at home depot tonight looking for some sandpaper to start sanding and polishing a couple of things under the hood.

Then I ran across a dremil tool and just bought it without hesitation. It has a bunch of bits and round sanders. So After sifting throught tools I took off the bracket for the coil and started sanding all the crap off of it. But I have a few questions.

What do you use to smooth everything out? My dads looking to get a bench grinder with a buffer pad on it. Would this smooth out the imperfections or would I need something else?

Plus I lopped my huge antenna to a shorter length and now it looks way better then before, but once again, it isn't perfect There is still small scratches in the antenna.

Thanks in advance

Dan.

EDIT: BTW Ive searched for tips on polishing and couldn't find anything that referred to a buffing wheel so I had to ask.

Bench grinder would work great. I'd also get a drill and some buffing pads. Use a tripoli compound first to remove all the scratches, then follow up with some white rouge.

Go back to HD.
You need:
Tripoli
White Rouge
A Spiral sewn wheel. (use with tripoli)
A loose flap wheel (use with rouge)

All 4 of these are in the tool section with the sanding wheels.

Then for the dremmel, you need:
Those sctoch brite wheels (there are 2 in a package..one each of different grits)
2 buffing cloths (one for each tripoli and rouge)

For that coil bracket sand with the 2 different scotch brite wheels (rougher first, then softer grit)
Then use the tripoli on the one of the dremmel cloths.
Then use the rough on the other dremmel cloth.

DO NOT MIX THE COMPOUNDS ON THE SAME CLOTH.

Start with this since this is an easy piece to do.

hey this is just a quick note on just the coil bracket i took 1500 paper then 2000 and i didn't even need to do anything after that on :nice: it and it looks the same as the day i did it, just a thought you can never go wrong with using fine paper before the buffing wheel comes out !

Usually by the time you reach 320 or 400 grit sandpaper you dont want to be sanding anymore so you let the compound do the rest of the work.

Thanks for the tips, and yeah, I just started with the coil bracket because if I somehow messed up which I dont think I will It wouldn't matter much.

Ill go to home depot again tonight and see If I cant find this stuff, If I cant and dont remember what the heck these things are Ill come back and post.

And man, that antenna looks ten times better even though its a little scratched up.

YEAHLO!
When we gonna see some pics of the beast??

SIde note. You "can" go with the finer grits. The more powerful the buffers are that are apply the compound, the sooner you can stop with the grits (not going as fine), but if you have smaller pieces to work with, then yeah, go ahead and use the fine grits for extra measure.

The PROFESSIONAL shops stop at 320 grit because their buffers really work the compound hard into the surface!
