OK, so before open track season begins, I want to pick up some sticky tires and a spare set of wheels to throw them on so I can use them just on the track. Since my car has Cobra brakes on it, 15" wheels are out of the question. I'm thinking about grabbing a cheap-o used set of 16X7 wheels from a SN-95 Mustang and mounting up some drag radials. I can find 17x8 just as easily, but I figure 16" will be less rotating mass.

Thoughts? Who makes a good 16" DR? BFG is usually my brand, so I'm leaning that way right now, but I'm open to suggestions.

Also, I want to buy a helmet, too. Anybody have advice on this? I know very little about safety equipment, haha.

I maybe wrong but isn't there quite a bit more selection in the 17" size than the 16" if you want drag radials? If you are running a stock style wheel I don't think roatating mass will really matter. Plus with the 8" wide wheel you can throw a bigger tire on it as long as you have the right backspacing.

Every car i've seen that switched from bfg's to m/t has gone faster. Either a 255/50/16 or 275/40/17 should work great.

Why cant you run 15's in the front? If you space them out it will work. 275/50/15's 8" wheel 5.5" bs or 10" 6.5" bs. Mt's wear out faster then the bfg's and Ive had better luck with the bfg's on the street then the Mt's. Cant compare at the track though.

Yes, but used 16" Mustang wheels can be had for dirt cheap, if not free. The idea is to keep this as cheap as possible.

My logic is that 16x7 and 17x8 both have about the same maximum tire width rating because of the difference in sidewall height. Technically, you're not supposed to put a 275 on a 17x8 rim, but I know people do.

I might consider getting a cheap pair of 17x8s and throwing 275s on them if anybody here has real-life examples of people doing this without problems.

Eh, I don't feel the need to buy a set of skinnies for this car, so I'm not worried about what I can fit on the front. I just want sticky tires for the back, and I don't want to have any headaches about worrying what will and what won't fit with my Cobra brakes. That's why I want to go no smaller than 16".

I think I may do a set of MTs, since these will be reserved for the track. Not really worried about road life, since I'll be running my street wheels/tires on non-track days.

Anybody have anything advice on helmets?

if they are gonna be a track only tire and you have a stick car you might want to look into a ET drag instead of a drag radial

So, a bias ply tire? Would that be dangerous on the street? I still need to drive the car to the track.

mt et street radials, hook everywhere, and way better on the street than a true slick..
