Drain plug on T5?

Where is the drain plug on a T5? I heard it was on the passenger side. All I could find was a green bolt at the bottom. I assume that is it, but there is another one above it. If that is the plug, it looks like you need a special tool to take it out. I tried to fit the end of a 3/8 extension in there. It fit, but I didn't want to turn it too hard being that I didn't even know if that was it. If those are them, is one for draining and one for filling?

Yep, the one on top is to fill, bottom to drain, and you will probably need a breaker bar to break the bolt loose.

The drain plug uses the 3/8" extension or end of a rachet, DO NOT LOOSEN THE BOLT OR THE TRANNY WILL NEED TO COME APART.

The fill plug is also a 3/8" extension style at the top, almost directly above the drain. Fill the tranny back up till it just runs out of the fill plug, then it is full. Put a little thread sealant on the pipe plugs before re-installing them. I find it easiest to fill the tranny through the shifter.

Rick, when you said not to loosen the bolt, what bolt were you talking about? I realized after I posted that I mistakenly referred to the plug as a bolt. Another question is, do I need to drain the fluid at all? Fifth is grinding so I am pulling the transmission to get it looked at. My rear main seal is leaking and I am assuming it made a mess out of the clutch and flywheel. I just got the car a couple months back so I don't know how long it has been like that.

Draining the fluid will help not make a huge mess when you drop the tranny. I use an old yoke and slip it in the rear of the tranny to keep it from pouring everywhere.

Put a rag in the rear of the tranny once you pull the driveshaft, wrap it in plastic shopping bags and tape it up. I'd leave the fluid in so the shop you take it to can see exactly what is going on.

No problem. You are still the 5.0 master! I do remember seeing that bolt.

Yeah, that bolt holds the 5-R reverse lever in place. You remove that, you might as well just drop the tranny because you'll need to open it up to put the lever back in place and bolt it up.

Yes and it will make you very mad, I know a few people who have made that mistake.
