Drastic Price Drop in Value in the 99-04 Mustang GT's

Mustangs have always dropped drastically in price after about 5-7 years. the foxes did it, sn95 did it, now our new edges are doing it. s197 will be doing it in another 5 years. the gas prices are jsut compounding the effect.\

i think the mustang is a stepping stone for most from an Enthusiast standpoint. people who are getting into cars will get a mustang or a maro and then they get a lil older make more money and want a faster better car so they dump their stang for cheap and go buy a vette or wutever. or they stick with it like us and just dump a rediculous amount of money into their stang.

Exactly! That's what I've been saying too. I want to keep my Mustang GT. I have no intentions of selling it.

Hey there folks. I was just passing through looking for a forum to join and found this thread. As I just purchased a Mustang that fits the description in this topic I figured this would be the right place to start....

I just picked up a 2000 GT Convertible from a dealer and paid $9700 for it. it was listed at $13k but they had a "Spring Used Car Fling!" sale and dropped the lot price to $10999. After all said wheeling and dealing I signed the paperwork for $9700 (yes, that was before down and trade).

The car is in absolutely awesome condition. Few flaws, moderate miles (64K) and 1 owner. This car was priced right at the original $13k for a dealer's lot but the they were willing to let it go for close to what their trade-in payout was. The salesman I worked with even admitted that moving used V8 sports cars was tough. "New" he said, "no problem. If you are looking for a hemi (it was a Dodge Dealrer) you're not worried about the gas prices. Used on the other hand; people looking for used are now looking for an economy car or bargins on trucks."

... makes sense to me... Gas prices high, the economy on a down turn, the "go-green movement; all these things factor into sluggish sales for cars in this category. It truly is a buyers market in that respect. And for that I am thankful

IMO the S197 stangs killed it. 2V Mustang GTs aren't the only ones hurting. Terminators have crippled the demand for 99-04 2V Roush and Saleens.

I'll never sell my GT. I'll just keep modding it and enjoy until it rusts beyond repair.

I had 2 Mustangs too, but right now I have only 1 Mustang. My 2002 Mustang V6 was totalled a few months ago and right now, I am left with only my 2001 Mustang GT. The 2001 GT had only 2,800 miles when I put it on the road in March. I now have 4,500 miles on it.
I've also purchased another car since my 2002 Mustang V6 got totalled. I wanted a much larger vehicle that had a lot more room than the Mustang so I purchased a brand new 2008 Dodge Charger R/T with the Road & Track Performance Package. I love the Charger. It's got a lot more room than my Mustang and it is also a luxury car. You should look at the Charger R/T if you are looking for a luxury car with some muscle.

Can anybody else in here tell me why this is happneing? I always thought that the 99-04 Mustang GT was not going to drop bigtime in value like it has. Especially if it is in mint condition and when it has under 5,000 original miles on it.

High gas prices mixed with the fact that it's a Ford is what it is I think.

It's definitely because of the high gasoline prices. I don't think that it has anything to do because it's a Ford.

This is nothing new all Fords have terribly low resale value
that's why I don't own one.Also Fords have their fair share
of problems too.
I own two Subaru's because they have excellent resale value,
very dependable and reliable,get great MPG,and can be made
just as fast as any vehicle out there.Subaru's are also one of the
top ten vehicles to hold their value over a five year period.
Sell your Ford Mustang and buy a Subaru if you want a vehicle
that holds their value very well.

Most people buy Mustangs because they like the way they look. Not because of resale/mpg/fastest car.

What's the gas mileage like on your two cars?

One source I found states 20-27mpg for an '03 WRX, 19-25 for an '07 STi, and 17-25 mpg for a '99-04 Mustang GT. Doesn't seem like much of a difference.

I personally average 19-20 in city driving, in a stock '01 GT, with an auto and 97k reliable miles. With a best of 310 miles on one tank. Not that bad.

And about Mustang pricing. Like others said gas is raping the industry. No one wants v8's or even v6's anymore. People are trying to sell their trucks/SUV's left and right. Honestly I can see gas hitting $5.00-5.10 for 91 octane by the end of this summer. And that's why my Stang is becoming a weekend warrior. Nothing like 35mpg on the Gixxer
