Draw in power somewhere??

I have a 87 GT and if it sits over a period of about a week or two the battery goes dead. I took it to a mechanic and he ran it and there is no drain while its running at all. It is only while it sits. There was originally an alarm on it but I took out the fuses. There was also a system (amps... etc.) that I took out, but the amp wires still remain. Any help?

With the engine off check the fueses for current draw by using a DVOM. I've seen newer cars (cadilacs escilades and other top end cars w/ lots of electronics) using as much as 300-400ma draw and still be normal (toatal). Just look for anything that jumps out.

Giddyup is right - i would not want to see a draw of more than .4 amps (as he posted) with the car off (from a short or alarm relays, etc).

also, it seems quite a few folks have issues like you do. im not so sure it is not a common problem, if not ideosynchracy, with these cars. check all the interior lights (and constant draw stuff) - as Jrichker has posted, things like a glovebox light that does not shut off can drain a battery in short order.

good luck.

same problem never had any stereo stuff in my car but it did have an alarm which i took out.. started killing the battery after i put in pulleys, a battery box, and electric fan in....so im gettin a 3g and hoping that fixes it.

Just a thought....if you have lighted mirrors on the sun visors, make sure they are turning off when you close them. Just had the same problem with my sons 90 lx. I hope its cured now.

I had an alternator that had a short in it and it would drain the battery, You could hook a volt meter up and watch it draw the juice out as soon as you turned the key off.
