I have a 1996 GT convert., and about a month ago the driver side door lock wouldnt work sometimes with the keyless or with the interior switches. Now it doesnt work at all, except (the strange part) when the door is open. As long as the door ajar switch is triggered the door lock works fine. Any ideas? i took off the paneling, and the actuator is fine as far as i could tell. Any reason it would only work when the door is open?

A weak actuator will do this. Put a new one in and I bet your problems are solved.

As long as you feel no unusual resistance with the key, it is the actuators going out.
Mine were both shot and the fob was beat to hell by the PO cause they would 'flinch' and tease.
Replaced both immediately problem sooolved.

Another thing i just noticed, was the door lock actually does work if the door ajar button is pushed, but it only does not work when the door is closed about halfway and more. When its more open then that, the keyless and the door switch works just fine. I might try to take the door apart and find where the wires go through the flex section between the car and the door, maybe a loose wire in there is whats wrong.

It is going to be the door latch itself, if you are having a hard time unlocking it with the key. The actuator is probably weak also, I would replace the latch and the actuator at the same time.
