Driveshaft alignment??????

Can anyone tell me what's the proper way to install a driveshaft.I dont mean the actual bolting of it in but the right way to align it.I know that I'm supposed to line up the paint mark on the driveshaft with something on the trans but when I did my tranny swap I got a new trany and alum. driveshaft.The drive shaft has two paint spots on it in different spots,one on the actual shaft and one on the coupling.On my TKO there is no paint marks at all on it.I'm getting a pretty bad vibration at 80mph and up which gets worse if I push the clutch in so I'm pretty sure it not in correct.I'm gonna unbolt it now and just try a different position and see if I get lucky.........

The driveshaft to transmission should be keyed, will only fit in in one orientation. then on the rear-end it should not matter.

You say that TKO is new, and therefore the clutch is also new?

Do you get the vibration at certain speeds only (driveshaft more than likely) or at certain engine rpms (clutch or balancer)?

If I had to guess based on what you said here I have to guess it your clutch is not properly balanced or that you have a bad joint in the d/s.

But try rotating the d/s on the pinion by 90' and/or 180'. that might do it for you.

Let us know if this fixes your vibration. I have the same exact problem. I just have been keeping it under 80 as I don't do much highway driving.

i thought it was the rear part of the driveshaft where you bolt it up that was important to keep lined up


the front part just splines into the tranny

Another vote for shifting the phase 90* or so and seeing how it does.

Yeah keep moving the d/s, there's only 4 diff ways to bolt it up, when it goes away mark it so you know for the next time.
the guys that build chasis around here (where my car is right now) say that the fms alum. driveshafts are ballanced @ 60mph and there really not that great

but you should be able to index it to the right position, if that doesn't do it pop it ou and bring it in to a d/s shop.

did you get the TKO w/ the 26 or 31 spline input shaft?

Or rather than removing it and taking it alone to a shop (for a static balance), take the whole car for a dynamic balance.
The DS pieces and pinion are loosely balanced (matched) at the factory. The much lighter rotational mass of the alum DS's helps a ton right there, but having the entire assembly balanced is the way to go.

An analogy would be having a tire alone balanced instead of having a wheel and tire (as an assembly) balanced.

For about all folks, simply phase-shifting the DS helps to get rid of most vibes.

I'm gonna try and rotate the driveshaft to the diffierent bolt positions on the rear and see if that helps.I'm also using the steeda driveshaft spacer not sure if that makes any difference I dont think so so I'll try and rotate the driveshaft and see what happens.

Stroke..I'm using the 31 spline TKO....

I'll prolly do it on Fri. morning so I'll let you guy's know how it works out.....

mein either one of my problems was ride height b/c lots of added weight, im gonna start messin with d/s next weekend..

I'm using the Steeda d/s spacer as well. I wonder if that has something to do with it, because it seems I have the same exact problem as you.
