Dear Fellow Stang members,

I have 4.10 gears and run about 2500rpm on the highway(where I do the majority of my driving right now) I know Corsa exhaust has no drone, but what about exhaust like Fowmaster, Flowtech or Pypes? I love the sound of Flowmasters, but I'm afraid of the drone at that rpm. Can anyone give me some hints as to what to expect? Corsas are a bit to expensive for me right now and I do want a little more sound at idle and I love the sound of Flowmasters as they rev.

i have heard the flowmasters have little to no drone on the 05 and up models, however they dont have the sound of the previous models. its still deep but not what i would call that "flowmaster sound" its probably slightly louder ad idle and mildly louder as you go up in the rpm's(my opinion) i have heard an o/r h wakes them up but i dont know if you want to do that. i have the bassani race axle backs, and they are deep and really aggressive. but if you go easy on it they arent that bad, they drone very little if you are in the wrong gear, say 5th at 45-50 mph but doing like 60-65 you really dont have to much drone. i beleive the same is true for the ford racing ones, or the borla stinger, alittle cheaper for the fords but same quality.

flows will be OK at this RPM unless to get an O/R H pipe. you do not want to be running that RPM with the flow & O/R H combo. a few hundre RPM more or less and it is fine. 2500 is the one spot that does not sound good and also drones. i dont remember any problems before the O/R H was installed. i went on several interstate road trips before, and had ZERO complaints. after the H, i cant go exactly 80 with the stock gears. 77 or 83 is fince, but not 80.

Drone 1. to make a dull, continued, low, monotonous sound; hum; buzz.

In the Mustang it usually happens around 2000 rpm in top gear with aftermarket exhausts. Never really bothered me much because I would drive a bit faster or slower if possible to avoid it.

I just did a big road trip and was down through Seattle and running at various RPM's on the trip I didn't have any drone except when I lugged now and again in traffic though it was very brief.

Just make sure if you install the Flowmasters that you really really really tighten down the clamp that connects the system to the H-Pipe. If not you'll think they're rattling when they're not. On the Mustang Source forums there are some threads showing the best way to install the clamp as well.

Not one of the brands you asked about, but the Magnaflows I have on don't drone, either. The L/T's woke it up a little bit and it drones a tiny bit at the right RPM, but nothing that you can't get used to (or enjoy!).

Just had the Flowmaster axle backs installed this morning. They sound very good IMO. They give the car a much deeper sound without being obnoxiously loud. They are near silent while cruising with the windows up and stereo off, however under a load they are audible. There is absolutely no droning at any rpm, BUT at lower speeds under a load I can feel the vibrations in my feet whereas the stock mufflers didn't do that.
