Dropping a 4.6 in a 96-98 V6????? How hard?

Whats up? Haven't been on here for quite some time. I was just curious as to how hard it would be to put a 4.6 in a V6 96-98 Stang. Those V6 models can be had dirt cheap in decent shape. How tough would it be? I think it would be a pretty fun project. I am sure it has been done.

HHHmmmmmm i really don't know. I did the 4v swap for a 4.6 but i would figure the v6 forums would know more. Most of us here start with a GT or cobra. I know a few people on here that have done that swap that you would like to do.

I'm sure you'll need a 4.6 computer, harness, maybe some fuel system work, figure out P.A.T.s, trans, K-member, etc... That is what i can think off.

I dunno. Probably would be easier just to buy a GT and do motor work.

Well what year are you looking at to buy? What year do you have now. Look at it this way if you did that swap you'll save a lot on insurance. I can't afford full auto insurance on a cobra, well i could but i'm not going to have a insurance payment like a car note. So i did the swap and now i have a 99 4v in my 96 GT.

It is worth the swap but if you do it make sure you do a 99+ 4.6 don't waste your time with the 96-98 there garbage. How much are you looking to spend??

O yea your going to need full exhaust for that swap too.

I would probably get a 96-98. I was thinking the same way as you, insurance would be alot cheaper. It would be kind of fun to do as well. Maybe. I read where somebody said if you do the swap V6 to V8 and you don't tell your insurance company they won't pay if you get in a wreck. I don't think that could be true. I have also read just the opposite. Some guy called and told them he did a swap(because he wanted to be covered for sure) and they told him they didn't care what motor it had in it they go off of the vin # or something for rates. I just don't think because you swap engines they could not cover you. What do you think? Thanks for the help. What would have to be done for P.A.T.s.?????

The fuel systems on the 96-98 V6 are return style, so sticking with 96-97 wiring and computer will cut down on the work. I would go with the 99+ longblock for the obvious power reasons and a T-45 for a trouble free tranny(compared to the 3650). You will have to have the PATS reflased to the computer that you use. You can have a locksmith program a key for you, take it to Ford, or reprogram the keys it has yourself-I don't have a source on this one though. Other than that you will only need the 96-98 engine w/ map and egr valve and pipe, engine harness and MAF, exhaust and hangers, 96-98 coils, alternator, brackets, hoses, etc. I looked into this for a 98V6 I owned as a daily driver a year or so ago, but then I sold it and bought my car for $4200(w/75K GREAT cond.). So honestly I would find a steal on a 96-98 GT and do the headswap for a whole lot less than the conversion. Swap would be fun IMO but only if I had money to throw around. Oh yeah, about ins., my insurance is only $98 a month through Progressive.

about the insurance....if you swap the motor, they should still cover it, but they'll only be covering a v6.

Thats what I figured. Which is fine. It just like with mods they aren't going to cover the mods if they are not told about them either.

I'd be on the safe side and tell them. I know for our insurance I'm supposed to claim any drivetrain modifications over $1500 or something like that. Find a donor car and take everything you can out of it, best way IMO. Good luck
