Drove a 03

I used to own an automatic 99 GT convertible. With Flowmaster American Thunder cat-back and a home made cold air intake it ran 14.4s...which is what my 5.0L automatic coupe did after gears, advanced timing, catless H-pipe and Flows, cold air intake, shift kit, and other bolt-ons.

the only way the 5.0 beats the 4.6 is that its easier to work on, cheaper to mod, and has a better exhaust note, IMHO. Other then that, the 4.6 motor is superior. The DOHC 4V motor is an absolute monster.

After Ford developed the 4.6 more it became a decent motor; especially the 4v motors. I think people either love it or hate it depending on whether they like the more refined power of the mod motors or the brutish power of the 5.0s. Ease of modifying and maintaining is also a factor in the love\hate relationship. Apart from both engines being V8s and in Mustangs it's basically comparing apples and oranges and comes down to personal preference. My father's '98 GT seemed like it picked up faster (and smoother) in stock trim than my '95 when it was stock but I still prefered the '95 based on the low end torque.

i'm a 5.0 guy till i die. The torque is soo much fun. Take a 4.6 and stick some 2:73's on it and see how much you like it then.

i would like to see a 5.0 with 2:73's stock vs. a stock SOHC 99+ 4.6 with 2:73's.

The 99+ would still beat it with 273's. They dyno 40rwhp more than a stock 5.0L and that is across the racing board.

It doesn't matter who beat who on the street. Most of the time the driver isn't a "racer" and isn't shifting at the proper rpm or quick enough.

I have beat a 03 zo6 before to 100mph in my 2000 GT...but does that mean it is faster...heck no!...that means I outdrove him.

My friends 98Gt is quicker than my friends 95 Gt and that is with the same driver (me). Downlow it is close (a tie) but up top as the speeds increase the 4.6L starts a slow pull.

Stock 5.0L is no contest for a 99+...

I also had both. I somewhat disagree with you.

In my opinion, it is cheaper and easier to make a 5.0 fairly quick. The 4.6 is a pain to work on. When I owned mine, parts were still under development as well, and my options were limited. I couldn't even find a nitrous system for mine as I didn't want to drill into the plastic intake manifold for a wet kit and dry kits didn't exist due to the returnless fuel system.

Making the 4.6 fast might not be hard anymore, but it still certainly isn't cheap. There is not "budget 4.6 build up" like you can do with the 5.0. Hell, there are I think only 2 options if you want a performance intake manifold for the 4.6?

I hope that the new 3-valve motor drives prices down on 2-valve performance parts, because the 99+ 4.6 is a great engine stock and cheap heads and intakes would be great to have.

Stock to stock, the 99 and newer SOHC 4.6 beats the 5.0 anyway you look at it, but when you start modifying I think it's a different story.

Flame me....but this is the same as the chevy forums, lt1 vs. ls1 thats about the same think some people love the old some love the new.Bottom line the 4.6 is faster stock but who cares?!There are advantages to 5.0 being easier/cheaper to mod, and the number of mods avaliable.Iv'e never driven a 4.6 but i like my 5.0.

all this talk of the 99+ SOHC. how about stock for stock vs a 96-98 SOHC?
