My 65 Conv. has the original stock 289 wth single exhaust, the only mod I made was to install a pertronix ignitor. I want to convert to Dual Exhaust and i don't know if I should stay with the original exhaust manifolds or install Tri-Y Headers. I want the car to have a good tone that will turn heads but not excessively loud, i've heard that flowmasters are Loud and I am not sure what mufflers to install. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also does anyone know if Tri-Y headers will fit a convertible, Mustangs Unlimited says for coupe/fastback.

Certain lame dual exhaust kits are not bent properly, and will not fit over the center plate in convertibles. Get one that does. Motive fits, stock or Flowmaster 2", 2.25", or 2.5". Those will even use stock hangers.

The tone will sound fine. Increase in performance will be limited unless you clean out the exhaust ports, matching them to the exhaust.

If your vert is stock, I would just get HiPo manifolds for it. I wouldn't bother with headers if its stock. Also, I would run a muffler like Magnaflow or Dynomax Ultraflo with a straight through design. Its a better design if you ask me and is also not as loud as Flowmaster. I had Flowmaster on my car and could not stand it. It had a hollow sound and droned inside the car. It was so bad that you had to almost yell to talk inside the car. I have Dynomax Ultraflo now and think it is nearly perfect for my car. If you want a more stock sound with a little rumble you could go with Dynomax or Chery Bomb turbo mufflers. Another very cool option is this.

+1 on the HP manifolds. I switched from headers to HPs years ago, when I got tired of all the stuff that goes with them. And if my exhaust wasn't in perfect, almost-new condition, the Arvinode would be going in there.

NOTE I SHOULD HAVE SAID EARLIER!
If you convert a 64-66 to dual exhaust, you must alter the rear brake hose/line setup, or the brake hose will rub against the LH tailpipe and kill you. I'm not kidding. You'll need the axle lines, dual type hose, short hose bolt, underbody bracket, and an extension for the brake line, unless you plan on replacing the whole line. Most everybody offers the hose and axle lines, the bracket is a bit tougher to find, and there's only one source for the extension.

Dynomax Ultraflow are the quietest of the turbo mufflers.

You are going to have to go custom with the intermediate pipes because of the reinforcement plate. You need to find a really good muffler shop to fabricate them so that they do not hit the body and do not have any really constrictive bends.

Be sure to have a crossover pipe.

On a stock motor 2.25" pipe is plenty big. I would buy some prebent tailpipes because they can be very hard to fabricate - even for a good shop.

If you have the Z-bar (manual trans) then you have to get a special Z-bar if you go with HiPo exhaust manifolds.

headers make a nice difference over manifolds and even over hipo manifolds and dont let anyone tell you different, try y's and a good 2 1/4- 2 1/2 exhaust will make a nice difference.

Dynomax Ultraflo are not turbo mufflers. I have them on my car and they are not quiet, but they are not as loud and the Flowmaster junk. They are straight through like Magnaflow. Dynomax also makes a Super Turbo. If you want a quite V8 sound the Super Turbo will give you that.
