Dyno tune - Emailed tune - Mutha thumpr Cams

hey everyone -
Need some advice -
Just installed the "mutha thumpr" stage II's NSR's with the blow by blow cam phaser lock outs ....now I know I need a Tune.....american muscle is running a great price on the SCT - w/a custom tune....but can I run it without having to bring it to a shop and throw it on a Dyno?....they want $375 for the tuner and another like $250+ for them to dyno it......my 07 gt is Not liking these cams ....it's running REAL rich...but I just want to run / retard the timing so it runs 1/2 way decent....no damage to the drivetrain ....I know a dyno will enhance the performance ....but I don't redline/hotrod the car....just want to be able to drive it around a slight bit....it sits in garage for the most part....and is in detail jail on the weekends...any help/advice would be great...Thanks!

American Muscle tunes suck. I like American Muscle, but there's no power in their tunes. They're just canned tunes they get from SCT. Are you in Chicago or AZ right now? if you're in Chicago, go to Brenspeed. They're not too far from you and have plenty of experience in dyno tuning cams. Otherwise, if you want an email tune, they're also a great one to go to for that so get on their site and order the tuner with tunes. Either way, I wouldn't drive the car without updating the tune first, and I wouldn't get my tunes from American Muscle. Anything else, however, they're great for.

you can get a diablosport programmer and tune it yourself. they have a setting that allows you to modify the factory tune, like the fuel delivery and timing and maf curve ect. i took mine to a dyno and lost hp. i had to ditch their tune and modify an old C&L tune to get my power back. just read the manual and drive and tune. it may take some time and several adjustments, but you can do.now you can't drive and tune at the same time, you will need to find a place where you can drive for a few miles and feel it out, then find a safe place to pull over and retune. then drive some more. i hope this helps. it would atleast save you the dyno fee. but for any real modifacatios, the tuner is a must.

Thanks ...I'm sure you are right...with enough time and patience....I can figure it out....brenspeed was pretty great on returning emails ....he had mentioned that there will be some driveability and power loss due to the nature of the lock outs and the cam.....but he said that I can tune it myself when I get the 4:10's off my work bench and into the car....and down the road get a cold air intake ....I had asked him if I increased the throttle body if that offset the power loss.....but he said that the tune will not affect throttle body...something with the curve MDF or something?.....anyway thanks for the heads up

Unless you know what you're doing, I don't recommend tuning by yourself. No need to take the chance. Brenspeed has plenty of experience with the cams. They are right, you'll definitely want lower gears. I'm surprised you put cams in before intake, but definitely get an intake. An intake and a tune alone make a huge difference. Don't bother with the throttle body. All of the aftermarket ones are riddled with problems, and have shown no verifiable gains on the dyno. The GT500 one is the only one that seems to not have problems, but unless you're running forced induction, or completely built, you won't see any gains.

Thanks ...i think your right ...I'll have breenspeed do the tune....by intake ...you mean a cold air intake...correct?.....I did the cams first b/c I thought that would be the most difficult...and boy was I right....nxt up the gears....which I'll have some help on....but it still won't be easy I'm sure......the intake is one bolt and a screw-driver ....so that's why I saved it for last.....my mustang basically just sits....I drive my FFE v6 taurus everyday to work...basically an undercover car... the police barely notice me if not for my erratic / no patience driving..

If the person that's helping you has done gears many times, this may be ok. If not, this is another thing I would not recommend doing by yourself. Most everything else I say go for it on DIY, but S197's are terrible to get just right. If it's not done just right, you'll be on here asking why your rear end is whining. The guy that did mine in my 2005 had done over 100 sets of Mustang gears alone, and still had to pull the rear end apart 3 times. Not trying to dissuade you. I love DIY projects. But just want to make sure you know what you're getting into.

I hear you ....my guy was on a winston west nascar team....and I downloaded a step by step picture how to off of another mustang website....he'll turn most of the wrenches....I'll just make sure he's doing it right...I also have a great ford tech that helped (actually did) the cams with me....thanks for the advice going w/o the throttle body.....if the cold air / tune will boost the lag in the car I'll be one happy monkey....

Yes, the cold air intake and tune will definitely get rid of the lag. It's mostly the tune that does it. But it's always good to help the car breathe. Sounds like you've got good help, so you should be ok.
