E-fan with stock shroud how-to, check it out!

Good thread here.

Bumping because I think i wanna ditch my e-fan shroud and mod the fan to fit inside the stock OEM shroud so i can use the factory overflow.

I want it to all look factory stock, but still function as an e-fan.

How is the cooling? I'm a little concerned that since the fan doesn't cover the entire stock shroud opening that it might cause some airflow to come in from the gaps in the sides rather than be drawn through the radiator....esp at idle.

Does it pull nice and hard through the rad at a dead stop?
 
I did this a few months back when my fan clutch crapped out on me. I used the Taurus fan and a DC controller. Cools the car fine with no issue, when the fan does kick on it's not on for long.
 
Good to know. Now i need to figure out which e-fan to cannibalize. My SN95 or my 3.8L Taurus. Same fan, but different stock shrouds.


Also, need to remember how the stock fan shroud mounts at the bottom
 
The stock shroud mounts with clips at the bottom of the radiator. I would compare the Taurus fan's size to a stock clutch fan but i haven't seen a stock one in years. I really wanted to make the Mark fan work because that thing fits so perfectly inside the shroud. To be honest, i probably could've made it work just fine...i just would've had to drill another set of holes in my shroud and i didn't want to do that. If you have access to a few stock shrouds in case you screw up...you could give it a try and i'm sure it'd work some how. My buddy has since switched to the Contour duel fan setup because he got a blower and needed the crank pulley room. I'm probably doing the same, but i really liked this setup for the clean and stealthy appearance.
 
What i would do is measure from the area on the shroud where you plan on cutting to the tip of the motor, and compare the two. You want the least amount of depth there that you can get away with. You can only sit the fan inside the shrould so far because you need ample room between the blades and the core so there's "flex" room when the fan starts pulling. You might be able to do away with this simply by adding more mounting bolts than i used so the fan is more rigid inside the shroud but i didn't want it to look like a hack job (my buddy even painted his bolts so they blended in more). This is all a lot easier if you have a spare radiator to work with so you can mock it all up outside of the car, as long as you know you're going to clear the water pump pulley.

BUMP for an awesome write up. I'm going to pick up a Taurus fan this weekend and use your write up. I'm going to try and find a 3g altenator but if I can't find one I'd planned on getting a Hayden controller, and 75 amp relay and see how it goes with the stock alternator. It's almost split 50/50 with people running this fan with a controller, and relay on the stock 75 amp alt vs people SCREWMING you have to do a 3g conversion. I've got a brand new alt (old one crapped out) and no big stereo, (stock ford tape deck) and not a whole lot of mods on the motor. So we'll see what happens.
 
I've ran electric fans on the stock alternator, it really just depends on your driving habits...if you drive with aftermarket stereo stuff, lights on, fog lights, stuff like that. Around here a lot of people do things half assed and there are a lot of cars with Autozone fans wired up with stock alts an they run just fine. The problem i had with it was at night my lights would get dim and i couldn't stand it. Of course, i was also running an '85 alt which is even weaker than the '87+ alts.
 
The gap between the stock shroud and sable fan is too wide for the shroud and fan to flow properly, now if you would have layed down some nice sheets of fiberglass to close the gap, sanded smooth, painted black and make it one piece, then you would have something that flows air.

I don't know about that...it may work better with the gap sealed, but like i said it worked well enough to cool a 347 all day long. Diameter wise the Mark VIII fan fits perfect, but the motor is too deep to fit properly.
 
I wonder if my SN95 fan will fit this way?

I never liked the look of it on my radiator since it looked "added on" I still have my stock shroud. Maybe i'll give it a try. It also lets me reuse my factory coolant bottle

Just found this a few weeks ago since im adding a 3 core aluminium radiator and electric fan so im probably late :)

If anyone is going to try to use an sn95 fan it wont fit with the 3 core radiator. The one i got was from a v6 it fits nice in the shroud almost a perfect fit but after cutting it out and fitting it in there was no way it would clear the water pump pulley. Good thing i only spent 25 bucks on it.
