Easy question for anyone.

I guess it's all about conventional wisdom. My opinion will err on the side of difference. Personally, I like the subtle contrast of the grey, or satin trim VS an all black finish. Sell it to yourself this way.......If your car was parked at the Mustang Walmart,....how many different car windows on black mustangs do you want to have to look in before you find your car?

How many black T-top '86 GT's do we look at and discuss on a regular basis, let alone see out and about daily? Being that both his and mine currently have grey trim, the murdered look is off the norm... Your opinion is valid, but since you are crazy as s hit, its dismissed.

Now that I've let you know that I'm rolling on the floor laughing, My point was given based on a much more "shotgun" approach. Despite the fact that you both have black, 4 eye, T top Mustangs, doesn't mean that they are the only 2 left in existence.
Dude asked for an opinion, I gave it. He didn't qualify that it had to be from a sane person,...so my opinion is VALID.

I am typically all about body color moldings, but I think your car is an exception. Especially being a 4-eye. I'm digging the contrast in the grey trim.

Damn, it took me forever to get back to this. Let's just say the wireless router AT&T supplied me with blows big donkey balls.

Anyway, I've actually got a can of satin black trim paint in the garage, so I could definitely (and have been seriously considering) go that direction.

Also, what do you guys think about maybe satin black on all the trim, except for the sail panel, headlight buckets, and belt molding. Go with a fresh coat of charcoal color for those...?

I'm also toying with the idea of a flat/satin hood stripe. I'm fond of these:

Also, total disclosure here: I'm currently ramping up for a roll-on paint job...! (BOOOO HISSSSSS)

I know, I know. We'll see how it turns out. I aint skeered. Expect a progress thread maybe a week from now.

You know some people have had great luck with the roll on jobs. If you know you're way around a DA sander, and a rotary or D/A polisher, it actually can turn out quite nice.

Haha, all 3 of those articles are part of my collection of "motivation". I've probably read the HRM Falcon one 5 times now.

My thing is, I'm not looking to win SEMA, I just want something that looks respectable. I honestly can't justify the 4-6 grand a "respectable" paint job would run me. ("Afford" is one thing, "justify" is something completely else.) The way I see it, I'll have maybe $200-$300 in paint and equipment by the time I'm done, and considering I had ZERO body working tools prior to this, that isn't half bad. The price is just way, way, way too good not to give this the old college try. And hell, in a year or two if it starts to fall apart or I end up hating it, I'll pay to have it professionally sprayed and be done with it. But if in a year or two it still looks good and I'm happy with it... Imagine what I'll be able to do with the money I'm saving. Hell, that's a nice Dart block stroker.

Agreed Nik. Black may be a tough one to pull off successfully simply because black shows EVERYTHING and you'll need to be very careful in your application, sanding, and polishing technique. That said, it's worth a shot.

The Rick Wrench article specifically says it would be a waste to spend $5,000 + on a new fancy paint job and not spend the additional cash to have it done right (media blast to bare metal, fix panel gaps, waves in the sheetmetal, etc...). An honest to god good paint job where the car is taken down to bare metal and done right would probably be in the neighborhood of 8-10 grand and perhaps more.

Good luck to you, my car has some mild failing clear coat (little white cracks in the paint... about 1 every square inch). If those cracks ever lead to peeling of my clear coat, I may end up doing the same thing you are doing. Take lots of pictures and post up what you did when you finally decide to do it. I may end up doing the same thing.

Keep the grey for sure, it just belongs on a four eye. I guess I'm not a big fan of many exterior (or interior) apperance mods. I always liked a car that was pretty much factory correct with the exception of different wheels and stance.

Either way I think I'd still steal you car when you're not looking. The only thing I would do is lose the pinstripe IMHO.

I agree, I think for the most part what Ford put on the Fox is all that should be on the Fox. The exception being some of the Saleen and Steeda stuff, though I was never big on the whale tail Saleen wing.

Yea, the pinstripe is GONE. It was the first thing I stripped off the car when I was prepping for paint.
