Ebay seller rant

Now you know why I try to limit eBay purchases to $40 or less - less if at all possible. The $40 isn't pocket change, but it is small enough that it won't hurt that much if I get a bad deal.

As far as laptops go, they have put a lot of money in my pockets - why? I fix computers for a living, and laptops break 5 times more often than desktop PC's. Hard drives go bad, LCD display screens crack or develop bad spots, the keys fall off the keyboards, they run half as fast as a desktop with the same processor speed and memory. I worked 10 1/2 years for a major bank and laptops helped keep me employed. Lots of little screws, tiny parts and snap together pieces (or maybe snap off and break pieces). It's a fun job if you like challenges and have a good set of magnifying glasses. :)

As far as buying a used laptop, find a computer store in your area that has a good reputation. Some are like the used car lots we all hear horror stories about. Avoid the small netbook devices - they are so cheap that if they break, you will pay more than it is worth to get it fixed. Stick with Dell, Compaq, & HP brands and you'll do better than with other makes.
