Well, as the title of the thread stipulates I'm looking for recommendations for a good ECU Scanner tool. The car is a 2001 Ford Mustang GT w/ 4r70w automatic transmission. Therefore, I'll need one that can also pull transmission codes as well. I don't want some cheap piece of crap either thats going to give me problems, and thus, I would rather pay a bit more for something more efficient. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

The SCT xcalibrator2 is a scan tool/programmer that many of us use. You can read ECU/PCM codes, and also tune the car (change timing, automatic shift points, datalog, etc). Another great scanner/progammer is the DiabloSport Predator. It has the same options pretty much as the SCT, and costs the same. I like the SCT tuners because if you ever have your care tuned on the dyno, there are TONS of dealers that use SCT software. I would find some dealers near you, and if there are more Diablosport tuners in your area, buy the Predator tuner. If SCT is in your area, buy the Xcal2.

i dont know if any of the scanners that autozone or kragen have pull out tranny codes but like mentioned above the tuners like SCT or diablo should be able to pull them

I like my PC-based Autotap because you can specify Ford-specific parameters (as well as the generics) when purchasing, log, graph, export to CSV files and you can also use the thing on myriad other cars. Works well for situations where you have more than one car in the family...

The only bummer is the need for a laptop but I think you can also get a version for the Palm.

You might also check out their "Sniper" tuning software:

Only by name I think. I think the Autotap "Sniper" is just a software extension of their existing hardware/software combo. Honestly, for tuning, I would probably go with SCT or Diablo. If you just need scanning/codes and perhaps some logging, the Autotap would be fine.
