About 2 months ago, I got "magnaflow" mufflers put on my stang. I really didnt like the flowmasters that were on it. You may all throw tomatoes at me for saying so, but I don't think flowies sound right on a 5.0. The hum at 2000 rpm is kind of annoying as well. Anyway, I decided to remove them.

A friend recommended magnaflows, so I dialed up a local exhaust shop ( I wont name their name. If you want to know, I'll tell you, but I wont use this board for slamming them) who said they could put a pair on for $280. Good deal, I thought. I dropped the car off, and picked it up later, never looking underneath it. The guy said he had to tack on 80 more because of damaged pipe. He said he put dynomax pipes on it. I took his word and paid for it and drove off. The car sounded better, to their credit, so I didnt care.

The buddy who recommended magnaflows, says "those dont sound like magnaflows" but I didnt think much of it.

Today I decided to get some hi-flow cats. This time I was told to go to Ed's mufflers in Aloha. I take the car in, tell em what I want, and they put it on the rack. Underneath the car was a gigantic mess of crap like none I've seen. I must have looked pretty ignorant.

There were 3 sizes of pipe on the car. It went from 2 1/4 to 2" then back to 2 1/2" on one side. The weld jobs were the worst I've ever seen. I'm no welder, but I've done better work in high school metal shop.

The mufflers were turbo mufflers. Cheap ass $15 turbo mufflers, and two different ones at that. One of them was a 2 1/4" id, the other was 2 1/2". Did they use an adapter to put 2 1/4" pipe into a 2 1/2" muffler? Oh heck no. Thats what welding rod was made for! He literally filled it in to make it fit. Dynomax pipes? Not even kinda.

At first the guy at Ed's tried to accomodate my mismatched turbo mufflers. I set a limit with myself of 400 dollars for this job, and was going to stick with it. He really started fumbling around trying to make it work, but the alignment of the pipes was very difficult. I could see the guy tried his best, but the fact was that this setup was doomed.

Might I note that the hangers weren't done right either, which caused my pipes to melt the back plastic, something I noticed a while back.

So finally, I say screw it. I tell him to rip it all out, and lets start over again. He did, and now I have 2 1/2" stainless steel all the way out. Dynomax pipes (for real this time!), magnaflow cats, and REAL magnaflow mufflers.

Total cost: $1040

They did an excellent job putting it together, the welds are clean, the exhaust is smooth and the hangers are right. The car sounds awesome, and there is a noticeable increase in power. It was hitting 5pm, so I told them I'd come in and have the tailpipes put on tommorow. So we'll see what it sounds like without the annoying cab resonance I got going with having them dumped before the axle.

The moral of the story is a tired old one. Don't try to cut corners and save money. I am satisfied with this system, and Ed's Mufflers in General. They did a good job, and I reccomend them now.

dude what were you thinking in the first place, you should of just got a magnaflow catback. You could of gotten longtube headers with a catted x or h pipe and the magnaflow catback for cheaper than that. oh and did you know magnaflows are stainless steel all the way back

Well, you are right. Had I planned an entire exhaust replacement, the catback would have been cheaper. But I would have to order it, wait for it to come in (find a place to ship it to), haul it to a shop in my truck, then drive my truck down there...

I just wanted it done today. Sometimes I dont mind paying a little more just to get it done and out of the way.

Well IMHO, if there is a mufler shop in the area that does work like that (not EDs, the bad one...) then you have an OBLIGATION as a fellow stanger to warn the rest of us about it.

Now Im not saying talk smack about the guys sister.... (even if its true ) but at least put up the name, and say "hey, beware...these guys ripped me off."

Glad you got it all fixed,
Dave-

Agreed, sounds like they deserve to lose business if they did that bad of a job on your car. I can't stand dishonest shops. Good to hear Ed's is not one of them.

that is a lot of money, but what matters is that your happy with it. Personally I would have went another direction as well, but everyone has their opinions. I am more curious as to what the first shop had going on to do that kind of work. That is just bad, and hopefully they wont see any of our cars in their shop.

Yeah, I could have gotten bassani, had I planned it. I just didnt want to order it, and go thru all the hassle, and find someone to install it. I live in an apt. so I can't do any of my own work right now, and I'm paying for it.

Time to get a garage again. I probably could have purchased a welder and some pipe, and a set of magnaflows and fixed it myself for cheaper.

well if you have money to burn like that then u should buy some parts from me.

The one thing that helped me finish college was knowing that I would have more money to burn on car crap in the end. Now I am thinking I need to get a doctorate . But seriously, I might hit you up. I see your parts list there, and might be interested in the intake and TB. But once again, I'd have to find someone to install someone else's parts, or find someone who'd let me use their garage for a couple hours.

I'll PM you though, when I make a decision on it.

For future reference, we have most of what stangers need in stock up here in Vancouver at Blue Oval Performance. In fact I am 89% sure that we had both Bassani pieces in stock, likely in both versions. Dont waste your time ordering, just drive up here. I have to go to Wilsonville to shop at Frys...so you should come up here for parts BTW..not tax on parts for Oregon customers.

Are you guys open on weekends? I've been trying to get a day off from work to go up there, but the world kind of ends when I leave. I plan on making a trip up there anyway to fulfill some of my wish list.

Well, kind of Summertime we are usually there (technically "by appointment"..) but Chung's wife is due soon so he may not be working weekends for a while. Best is to call to make sure. (360)993-1745
Shipping is not a problem, to you I wouldnt expect it to take but a day if you just cant leave. Or there again, maybe it would give me another excuse to visit Frys..that place is pure evil.

At the least try to make it up here for our meet on the 23rd...its gonna be big! And it will give you a chance to check out our stock.

Cool. I will try to do that.

BTW, the shop is Wholesale Muffler in Oregon City. Someone actually reccomended them to me, but I certainly wouldnt send anyone there. Very Shoddy and overpriced, and his "magnaflow" mufflers are available at Shucks for about 15 bucks a peice.

I had to fight myself not to throw them through their front window, instead I think I'll just tell everyone I know about what happened.
