Educate me on Rear Axles

I am going to replace the rear axles in my car, primarly as a safety concern. I am researching the different choices. Best I can tell, stonger axles with C-clip eleminators is the way to go, but what spline? Brand? I was also considering going a little longer than stock in order to eliminate using wheel spacers on my Welds. What is the best steup for the money? What kind of torque can they handle?:shrug:

Not sure about the reply. I have searched the Strange Engineering website before. Can I put 31 spline axles in my stock housing? Don't I have to have a 31 spline carrier? How much torque can a set of axles like that with C-clip eliminators handle?

31 spline axles are going to be suggested by just about everyone if you go talking about strength, they are just simply stronger. The more splines, the more strength, 33 splines are even stronger than 31s. If you are wanting to stay with your factory locker (assuming you are still running factory locker on an 8.8 rear) you will need to stay with 28 spline axles. However, if you want stronger axles, you really need 31 spline to gain much benefit. I personally like Superior axles, it is what I put in my car and love them so far. Moser is another good brand. You may gain only a little bit of strength by staying 28 spline and going with a name brand like Superior or Moser, but possibly a little stronger than factory. It really depends on the kind of torque you are or will be making. Hope this helps.

I am currently putting down 457 ft lbs of torque to the tires. I am running a new locker, but it is the stock type. I thought the reason most guys replaced there axles was due to them breaking in the middle. I have seen a lot of vids with guys breaking there axles off on the launch....just don't want that to be me.

Personally I'm not a fan of Moser, I've seen of too many guys breaking them. If I were you, and assuming your car is primarily street, I would go with an Auburn Pro or Eaton 31 spline differential, differential cover, along with a set of Strange 31 spline S/S axles. I've heard guys running C clip eliminators and some leak, some swear they don't. I personally skipped that whole issue and had a set of 9" ends welded on. 9" ends won't leak. Contact DTS, these guys built my whole rear end and seem to know thier stuff.

I would run a strange 31 with 9 inch ends and skip those c-clip elims. I have taken 31 spline mosers and stranges into the high 8's repeatedly

Thanks for the info. I will look them up. What is the difference in the 9" ends and the stock ends? I hate to say it but I cannot remember what one looks like.

With that kind of power and no traction issues its VERY smart to upgrade the axles. If your looking to go the best route, id go with strange 31spline axles, and an eaton 31 spline. I dont have expierence but i looked into doing this when I have money, and auburns are not rebuildable, if your looking to do it on a budget you can look for a diff in an older v8 explorer, they had factory 31 splines, or buyfordracing.com sells them new

You can either do cclip emliminators, or weld 9" ends on, Its been a while since I read up on them so I forget exactly why you need them, but the 9" ends will serve the same purpose as the cclip eliminators but will be better, more money and work though. What I looked into doing was getting the 31 spline traclok from buyfordracing.com, and getting the 31 spline axles and cclip eliminators from strange, and that will hold up ALOT, remember eaton and the factory 31 splines are rebuildable if it is not enough to hold the torque, if its not enough with the auburn youll have to buy a whole new diff. and scrap the $400 one you just bought.

I run Moser 33 spline in my Mustang with a full spool. I also run a set of Moser's in the Ford 9" in my Chevy.

You don't want to buy longer axles. If you are running wheels spacers, it's because you bought the wrong offset wheels.
