Electric Fan Wiring

My electric fan is wired so that it is on even when the key is off.
It runs alot after you turn the engine off which really drains the battery.
Should the fan be wire so that it turns off when you shut your engine off?
I've been popping the hood and turning the fan to a higher setting when I'm through driving just so it doesn't run as much.

What kind of fan controller do you have?

The controller is a knob on top of the fan. Turning it counterclockwise makes the fan turn on at a lower temperature, clockwise is the opposite result. There is a sensor probe that mounts throught the fins on the radiator.
I just found the sheet on the fan. It's a Flex-a-lite Black Magic #175 designed for 86-93 5.0 Mustangs. I didn't install the fan. By what it says in the manual, you can wire it so it shuts off with the ignition or have it run after the engine is shut of by wiring it to a non- ignition source.
I was just wondering, which way was best recommended.

Sounds like it's wired to a constant hot 12v source, and that's why it is running all the time, it is always receiving juice from the battery.

You don't want it wired into a constant 12v source for power. I'm not sure how you have to wire it, but somehow it has to get to key-on power, so the only time it runs is when the ignition is on.

Maybe someone else will chime in here, I have a DC Controller so I'm not sure where you need to wire it.

I would use a digital multimeter and find a source in the fuse box for switched power. Then use one of those add-a-circuit things below. They have them at parts stores.
