Electrical

My electrical in the car is pretty bad...... i was thinking that a new wiring harness could be installed.... But do they make a complete wiring harness that would compensate for all components and a modern stereo system?? Is it too much of a hastle to DIY?

Painless wiring makes a direct replacement harness for a 65-66 mustang. I used painless' unversial kit to do my 67.

IM still not quiet finished putting it in. Its a pretty big hastle to do but is well worth the trouble IMO. You can get harnesses like mine with ciruits built in for all modern accessores.

How much will this harness cost me and exactly what all needs to be taken out to start this upgrade? Does it come with good directions???hahaha

Bear in mind that the "Universal Harness" isn't a direct fit for the 67. That said, Mustang Monthly did a Painless harness install in a 65 (or was it a 66?) a few months ago and it was fairly straight-forward. The only downside is you have to re-use the stock connectors from your old harness on some of the terminations of the new Painless harness. The advantages are high quality wire, easy tracing and conversion to a new fuse block with spade-style fuses.

If you want to add a bunch of aftermarket accessories, I would recommend the auxiallary fuse block by Painless. I got one with 7 circuits (3 always on and 4 ignition switched) that could not have been easier to install.

Good luck!

64.5 restomod:

I used the specific harness from painless and have the following additional..."non-stock" accessories:

1. Two electric fuel pumps
2. Electric Windows
3. Electric Door locks
4. Power Antenna
5. electric trunk release
6. Pre-oiler
7. GT FOG Lamps
8. NOS
9. 2 AMPs, 2 active cross-overs
10. 6 guage instrument cluster
12. Dakota Digital shift indicator
13. Alarm
14. Rear courtesy lamps, Trunk courtesy lamps

I bought the stock Painless harness and 14 spools of 14 Guage all colors of the rainbow and systematically, started in the trunk, added to the harness as I required. It worked out very well.....with the exception of single speed windshield wipers.....a little electrical data missing on this one.

I highly recommend the ~$600 that it costs. Wiring an entire car without some REAL GOOD planning, understanding, and expereince, will haunt you forever. I'll bet that doing one yourself....would even cost more.

ALSO, I modified where wires go and how they are routed. See the picture below. 99% of all wiring forward of the firewall go through the firewall and into each fender. I omitted the ugly mess of taking wires from high to application. All my engine connections come from behind the engine, making for a much cleaner engine bay. See attached. Note the billet blocks covering the old square bulkhead connectors. Also attached is where/how I mounted the ignition components. (Battery is trunk mounted)
