Emissions legel AFR ?

I bought a set of the emission legel AFR 165's. I dont have a air pump or anytype of emission eguipment on my car. Do I have to plug up the holes that are on each side of the head(front and BACK)? I put the engine back together and thats when i realized i didnt plug those holes? Now I see 4 ports. But AFR only gives you 2 threaded plugs which I assume are for pluging those holes. If I don't plug them up imgoing to have a exhaust leak right? Any help wouild be great.

The two in the back are the ones you plug. The ones in front get the provided thread adaptor inserts for your accessory bracket bolts. I dont think my set of 185's came with plugs for the thermactor ports in the rear, I had to go to the hardware store and get two short bolts the correct size and used them to plug em up. I know you can buy the plugs from afr but its not necessary.

You can also get the threaded inserts/plugs from a Ford dealer, but bolts from a hardware store will work just fine.

I checked AFR's website and found the inserts are 5/8" -11. So any bolt with that size and thred will work. Going to hardware store tomorrow to get some for my 185's.

Yeah my emissions legal AFR's came with two plugs also...

You will need a total of 4 of those plugs for those heads if you have your smog pump deleted as I do...

They sell thermactor plugs which "plug" up the hole where the smog equipment goes (the same thing works for the front of you heads...you can get them at a Ford Dealership - part # F4ZZ-6E086-A or you can buy some from Summitracing - part # TFS-51400265...when you put them in the front of your heads your alternator bolt and power steering stud will screw right in perfectly...when I first seen the holes in the heads were to big doing my h/c/i swap...I thought I put the heads on backwards

Just put them in with some hightemp silicone and screw them in until they stop...

He won't absolutely need 4 - he can use 2 of the threaded inserts on the front; and simply put the same size bolts in the rear ports.

Gshh...okay you can use the bolts...I was just trying to show that you will need "4 things" to get the job done...I personally don't like the fact of a bolt sticking out of my heads but that is just me I guess

If you get the right length, the bolt would screw all the way in -- all you'd see is a lock washer and the bolt head -- just like that row of 5 head bolts that hold the head on below the header. Except these 2 are on the backside of the head where you'd have to look awful hard to see them at all.

you have two plugs in your stock heads..

You can re use the front 2 plugs from your stock heads to put in the front of the AFRs, so you can mount your accessories, and then use the two AFR gave you to plug the smog holes in the back.. Or vice versa, new ones from AFR in the front to mount accessories, and remove old ones from front of stock heads and plug rear smog holes in AFRs....

I had problems getting my stock plugs out of my heads...they were seized in there...so I got some new ones from one my friends at no charge

I wish someone knew the bolt size to put in a thermactor plug so I can screw it in behind the head...when I'm at the local hardware store and am going to try different bolts it is not exactly the coolest place to rub your hand around messing with different size bolts...

Pretty sure they are 5/8 x 11. The only problem is that 5/8 x 11 bolts at the hardware store start out at like 1.5" long. You need to cut them down shorter to get them to tighten up and not stick out the back of the head.

So that bolt size with a little trimming will screw inside an actual thermactor plug (similar to the process of screwing in the alternator bracket bolt or powersteering stud into the plug) except I"m going to use it to tighten it in the head more because I didn't put them in all the way...

I got some at a local fastener center. 5/8 -11. I found some 1 inch long. Worked like a charm

So did that take the place of a thermactor plug or did you screw that into the thermactor plug to drive it further in the head hole?

5 spd - read the original post; he's closing up holes, not trying to tighten what's already there. Did you get yours done?

Yes I realize he is trying to close up the holes...but I don't know whether the last few posts were directed at me or the original post...that is why I asked...

No I haven't did it yet...I wish I knew the size to put in my plug because if I pull up to a hardware store in my car I don't want to scrounge around behind my heads trying to find the right size to match (with a handful of bolts) because it is kind of warm under there I was just hoping somebody had the thread/length size for the plug...?

Pull the matching bolt out of your alternator bracket; measure it; write it down; go to the store; buy the bolt. Alternatively, have someone else take you and the bolt to the hardware store and buy a 1" long version of the same bolt. By the time you're back, you're car will be completely cool, and you can put all the bolts back in without toasting your tender fingers.

Like Micheal said, it took the place of the plug. Put some high temp rtv on it and works great. Try to find something 1" long. The fastener center I got mine at had a bag of these bolts (10) for less than $10 Can.
