end of the V8 engine?

I saw a front page article in a auto engineering magazine that said GM is planning on dropping the V8 engine for the caddilac line when the northstar motor is due to be replaced in 2010. It stated that the increase of the CAFE to 35 MPG will probably mean a multivalve direct injection V6 will power the line, even the largest models. Is the mustang next? The global warming idiots are really p@##(ng me off.

all true...im doing a research paper on it...all auto makers will have to meet a 35mpg minimum by 2009 or fave huge fines....this just means that there are doing to be alot of supercharger 4 cyl, 6 cyl and factory turbo'ed cars out there to come along with alot of 4 cyl's. What sucks about this is that most of the car makers profit comes from the gas guzzlers like the f series trucks and the mustang.

iirc, if you actually look at the law, it says that the average mpg of all vehicles produced by a company will have to be 35mpg or something like that. so a 20mpg f-truck would be balanced by a 40-50mpg focus. assuming i understand whats been said anyway, i could be totally wrong

You are correct. C.A.F.E. stands for corporate average fuel economy. This is why Ford used to sell the Escort at a loss. Also, I don't know about 1/2 ton trucks, but 3/4 and up are exempt from CAFE.

Yep so not much should really have to change. Mustangs should still be around for awhile anyways!

That's fine with me, as long as I still have the three in my sig.

I'm too damn poor to buy new cars anyways so I almost feel like it doesn't affect me. yet.

Exactly. It's unlikely that i'll ever buy a car off a dealership lot so in a way i kinda don't care. It would suck to see the demise of so many great cars, but all good things come to an end.

Also it doesn't necessarily mean the end of a V8...it could me the rise of much smaller displacement V8s, V10s and V12s.

This all just means the auto makers are going to have to break away from their old tricks and learn new ones. It happened in the 70s and they gradually came back around into real performance. Today's muscle cars are worlds more efficient than they were 30 years ago, and 30 years from today there's either going to be another efficiency revolution or we'll all be sitting around talking about THESE good old days just like our parents did about the '60s.

Technology will find a way.

I bet they were saying the same thing in the mid 70's...and now there are 500HP stock street cars rolling around.

That's what i'm sayin....and the GT500 for example is the most powerful Mustang ever built and it gets better mpg than any of the classic V8 cars did. There may very well be a bit of a performance recession though but i have faith that Detroit will find a way.
