Isn't there a thread where you guys talked about your builds, what worked and what didn't? I've been looking for it and for some reason I can't find it. Please point me in that direction if it exists. Thanks.

I am looking for a good build involving Heads, cam, intake, upgraded ignition and injection components. I don't want to break the bank, but I want something that's reliable and quick enough to get out of its own way. I really enjoyed the Edelbrock combo on my '65 351W.

This is in the '95 GT Convertible with an AOD.
Thanks,

At this time you are talking in a very general kind of range :)

The more specific you get ... the more specific we can answer :nice:

How much rwhp are you looking for

Do you wanna be NA or use some kind of PA

If NA you can go ..........

low budget OEM heads/intake & mild cam for 260 to 280 rwhp
or
More pricey after market stuff for 280 to 320 rwhp

You can go blown with KB or Vortech

You can go turbo or use juice

What are your expectations or long term plans

Everybody here is just great at spending your money :rlaugh:

Gotcha. I thought there already existed a sticky thread where the best builds where spelled out. Although everyone has his own idea of what makes the best build. In the past, I used a prepackaged deal like Edelbrock's RPM setup. It is a little more complicated in my opinion with EFI on a late model car. My target is 375-400 RWHP. I am also very strongly considering a Kenne Bell.

You will not be able to obtain that goal with an NA OEM short block combo with
an application of street use being considered.

Yes ... you could put something together that would give you those peak
numbers but ... it is gonna be more like a race car application and you would
have no street manners to speak of.

If you wanna keep the focus on NA and obtain that goal ..........

I'd do a 347 with appropriate aftermarket parts and a fairly aggressive cam

A really sharp tune would most likely allow you reasonable street manners

Of course ... This would be nowhere near a ... budget build :nono:

The KB would certainly allow you to reach your goal with an OEM sb :nice:

IF ... you structure the rest of the combo to support it as needed ;)

Don 95Vert is a fellow who has had success with KB's :D
so
You might search for his name or go to his site for more details :)

I'll look up some of his threads...I am not looking for a budget build, but which is the best bang for the buck: tuning a 347 built right, or running the KB on the 302 tuned right?

both? 347 KB blown would be the easiest way to reach your power level.

if it was me doing it over again, i'd start with a 347 built to handle whatever you want to throw at it. if your not satisfied with the N/A, toss on a KB.

A few more general things to consider :D

The aode will hold down the numbers a bit so if you really wanna hit 400 to the
wheels ... you are gonna have to step it up a bit

You talk about the tune ... and rightfully so ... cause at that level .................
ANY of your choices of build is gonna need a tune

You can expect a chip to be around $500 or if you go self tune I'd say you are
looking at laying out around $1000

I always cringe when advising someone to go blown :bang:

NOT ... because it doesn't make good power
or
NOT because I don't like blowers
but
BECAUSE ... I feel a blown combo can be less forgiving than NA

With blowers ... You have to be more thoughtful about grade of gas, heat,
spark, and more of those little things that can get out of hand which then
can pop a hg in a heart beat

Then again .......
a NA combo at that level is not just ... plug and play as well :rlaugh:

Just saying the cost and compromise to build and maintain a combo at
that power level needs to be considered and you need to understand
all you can about such a combo.

If your current sb is in good shape ..........
I'd lean toward the KB

I'm going through this right now... I built a 347 from my stock block. i had the mains splayed and the rotating assembly is a scat forged steel. i used RHS cast heads and i still ended up having around $6k in it.

after buying the intake set up along with all the other things that go with it, throw in another $2k.

then the exhaust will be another $1k..

and i did the anderson ford pms unit so throw another $1500 with the wide band meter....

oh yeah don't forget about the juice kit, $700.

so i am almost at $12k just for an engine upgrade....

i'm still doing the final tune but the 100 miles that i have run it so far seems to be some what streetable...

just thought i would let you know what i have done to put some numbers to it..

i am also doing a suspension kit, brakes, and a saleen body kit.. agh!!!!!

it's starting to depress me at the money i am wasting at this thing...
