I am planning to get a new engine/transmission for my Mustang 97' v6 on Ebay. I am thinking on 2001 and up...Is it worth it? Also I want to know what parts can I change get some more horse power?
I'll do ya one better...go with a stoked bottom end, forged rods/pistons, and big valve heads with a box upper and top it off with all the boost you want. Screw the split port swap crap.

Just my opinion but if your going to go through all the trouble of putting in a new engine, you might as well put a bigger one in. you say you have a 97 V6, well if your running a stock 5-speed T-5 tranny, you have the same transmition as the 94, 95 5.0's. you can keep the tranny for now saving you some money up front till you replace it and spend a little more on the engine. You can get a "new" ford rebuilt 5.0 with warrenty, from Mustang Part specialties (www.stangparts.com) for $1750. They come complete from oil pan to lower intake so you really just need upper intake and front accessories. A 5.0 is not a real great engine but it is a lot better than a six as far as a starting point goes. anyway, just my 2cents.
302 isnt a real great engine? the potential there is massive man. I was reading through some other forum the other day and i totally agreed w/ what they said, some kid on some forum was talkin about imports and what not and was trying to get 300 horsepower at the weels, then dude said, look spend 3-4k on a late 80s foxbody mustang headers,catback and a supercharger thats 300 at the rear wheels for about 6k alone if you shop right and know who to take your car to or do your own installations.

To drop $1,750 on an engine that is bone stock is crazy. If you are going to go through the trouble of doing a 5.0 swap, then why drop close to 2 grand on just the engine, an engine that is still box stock. But hey, that's just me...
I would love to do a swap with a 5.0 based bottom end, or for that matter go with a 351 based 393 or even a 408. There's so much potential in those old "dinosaur" pushrods that is screamin' to be let loose.
its a nice trade up but... i would save the money for the 99 up motor and put a little money in to yoru motor and you will wind up with alot more hp than even the 01 can give you. go to www.rpm-mustangs.com and www.supersixmustangs.com and check out their prices on ported heads, intakes, and a cam those mods alone will boost your hp and tq WAY WAY up and make you much much happier than buying an 01 motor for only 40hp and 5tq, the heads, intakes, and cam will boost you up to around 210rwhp and 220rwtq~ (notice thats at the wheels not motor you have 120~ now)

I see your point about potential, and also the other guys point $1750 on the "stock box", but I was just thinking that it would be a good place to start. But I was just thinking about starting cost. you figure in upper intake will cost about $250 or so not to mention front accessories. But 215 hp is not a great engine when compaired to a 194hp V6. But if you can afford to pay $1500 for a set of heads, $300 cam and some extras you can get 400 hp naturally assperated but the cost is high! I was just thinking about a good starting point. Just my 2 cents.
the 215 hp is based on stock heads and intake flowing through a stock MAF. If you change those over to a carbed setup with higher flowing heads, you'll be getting a lot more power........
