Engine Color

Hey Guys,

I went to Autozone today to buy paint to repaint my 66 mustang's 289 c code, and noticed that the only high temp paint they sell is dupli-color (i was looking for krylon because some one had recomended that to me) anyways they had three types of Ford Blue: Old Ford Blue, Ford Blue, and Dark Ford Blue. Which one do i need, or should i look some where else to find some krylon? I appreciate any imput. Thanks

I use Krylon #224 - Ford blue on my 69 block.

I think Grey/silver looks sharp on a stock motor. But that is just my opinion. When I go to car shows it is nice to see something other than ford blue or chevy orange on every engine. But again, that is just my opinion.

I might be wrong but I think the 289 was still painted black in '66. Krylon is the better choice but dupli-color will work fine.

Where can i buy some Krylon Temp Paint? Ive looked at Autozone and Advanced and both only sell Dupli-color in the Temps.

You need the darker blue.

The correct color is called "Corporate Blue", though thats not something you are going to find in a rattle can.

Blocks were black in '65 only.

Plasti-Kote #224 Corporate Blue... its good for 500 degrees. Just make sure you do a good job of degreasing and rinsing the block. I did 3 coats and 3 years later it still looks new.

You're not having much luck here. In 66, everything was painted blue, block, heads, intake, valve covers, etc.

At least 3 companies produce #224 Ford Corporate Blue in spray cans. Plasti-Kote, Duplicolor, & VHT.

Any idea as to where to find those brands/colors seeing as my local autozone doesnt carry them?

Not trying to confuse things, but I have found something contradictory from a source that at least sounds knowledgable (about Galaxies anyway), though I can not verify that. Anyway, the point is that supposedly for the 67' model year, Mustangs and Galaxies do not share the same paint code, and they claim that 224 is correct for the Galaxie not stang.

14. I have a 67 Galaxie Convertible that I show seriously at a lot of the larger shows across the East Coast. It does very well in all the categories in each show except when it comes to the engine compartment. I am constantly being marked off for engine color. The engine is painted Ford Blue and I have checked it with all the other Ford products that I show against which are usually Mustangs, Fairlanes and Torinos and it is the same color as those cars. Can you tell me what the problem is? When I confront the Judge, they tell me that the motor is painted the wrong color. I thought there is only one Ford Blue. Since you are a National Judge, could you tell me what my problem is? If it is the wrong color, what color should it be? Whatever you say, I will abide by.

This is a fairly common problem with the late 67 and up Ford products. Most people believe there is only one color of Ford Blue. That is where the problem is. In late 67 Ford made a slight change in the color of the full size Ford engine and the truck engines. They are not the same color Ford Blue as the Mustangs, Fairlanes and Torinos. This is where the problem is. The late 67 and up full size Ford cars used a darker blue which is the same dark blue that the Ford truck engines used. If you will look at the Mustangs, Fairlanes and Torinos, you will see that this blue is actually lighter so there is a distinct difference between the full size Ford and the other car lines from late 67 and up. I realize that a lot of you are going to disagree with me especially the owners of these cars, but if you found the original paint formula, which I have found, the full size Ford and the truck blue is darker and is not the same code as the Mustang, Fairlane and Torino. So there are two different blues used from late 67 and up. If you use Plasti Kote's #224 Ford Blue, you will find it is the correct color for your 67 Galaxie. {J/F #2 '99}

In my opinion the Plasti-Kote #224 Ford Blue is NOT the correct Blue for the 1966 Mustang (to dark). I painted my air cleaner last summer with this color and now it stands out from the valve covers which are still in their original color.

I used some of the ford blue duplicolor to paint my timing cover, very bright blue lemme tell ya. I think just the regular ford blue will work, gimme til tomorrow to pull it outta the garage and get a pic and you can see for yourself.

If your restoring, go for the blue, restomod, I'd try something different. I might be going for the Black block, alluminum heads, intake, etc. Prettty much black, aluminum and a little chrome in the bay. But in the end, it's all your decision.

Yeah Im trying to go full restoration with this one. Swede, Not sure if this is a typo or if im misreading it but you said the ford blue duplicolor is very bright so you would just go with regular ford blue do you mean another brand or what?

I've always used dark Ford blue or Ford Corporate blue. These may be different shades, but I can't tell the difference. Light Ford blue looks too much like Pontiac blue to me. Plasti-kote is the last batch I bought and it was Dark Ford Blue on the can.

I used #1621 from dupli-color (i think, it as home). Worked great. However, I tried to then clear coat a few items with high-temp clear coat from dupli-color and it damaged the paint, alligator'ed - JIC.

By your member name, should I assume your is vintage burgundy? I have a 66 convt with VB and red interior. If yours is red, can you send pictures, cant find that combo anywhere.
