It seems that after the complete PI motor swap in my 96 GT the engine pings, especially say for instance if do a rolling stop through a stop sign and only downshift into second. Basically anytime the engine lugs. It's almost like there is too much advance or not enough fuel. It only seems to happen when the engine is fully warmed up. I still haven't got a tuner since the complete PI motor swap. Could the tune or lack of be causing the excess pinging ?

A tune is highly recommended. Sounds like some tip-in spark retard is needed, or, an adjustment to transient fuel. Either way, your tuner can get your car set up right. Look at it this way: you've spent time, effort, and money on the new engine and a good tune will get the most out of it (and, more importantly, protect your investment).
