I got the engine out of the car today despite my pulled shoulder muscle due to having to do an emergency gear extension in the airplane yesterday. There is no cross-hatching on the cylinder walls. I guess I'll be pulling the shortblock apart for a rehone and refresh. Oh well, more money.

Were you having blow by or eating oil?

No, and great compression. But once the hone job goes, it will start to scorch the cylinder walls. Better to just get it rehoned now, instead of a new block later.

That blows.... what brought about you yanking the motor???

I just sold the motor in mine yesterday and have to pull it this week... not exactly thrilled about doing it...

I had a blown intake gasket, which I assumed was a head gasket. It was in a location I couldn't see until I had the accessory bracket off. By that time I already made up my mind to take the engine apart. So, since the motor is 10 years old, I might as well pull it out, and give it a good looking over. The paint on the oil pan has come off, and it's started to rust. The heads need to have some bolts holes fixed. And I wanted to go ahead and put the tubular K-member in that I have hauled with me for like 6 different moves over the last 7 years.

Why did you sell your engine?

Oh cool. I thought you were saying you were selling your 331.

Not only was it time to work on it, I can not emphasize enough how disgusting my engine bay is. I had leave sitting on the lower intake, and dirt piling up everywhere. Not to mention, I had a problem with a belt rubbing a few years ago, which has spread fine sticky rubber dust all over the engine bay. Lots of stuff in places you just can't get to with the the engine in.

I can't remember exactly. You're like a crew chief or something on a C-130 right?

Ours is a lever that comes up from the floor, and it opens a bunch of hydraulic valves that let the gear free fall. There is no cranking backup system, if that fails, you're landing on whatever you have left that's still hanging down. We had an airplane land in ATL with the left main retracted last year. It wouldn't come down. You're suposed to get out of your seat and lift it up while standing in the aisle. There was so much **** going on, I decided to stay in my seat and play badass, and just pull it up while sitting down. Apparently I'm not in as good a shape as I thought. I would say it was pretty close to 140lbs of pressure to pull it up. I'm definately paying for it now.

I'm a Flight Engineer...not too many of those running around with the airlines anymore.....pretty much extinct with glass cockpits. Was a 130 engine mechanic for ~10 yrs prior to becoming a FE...good times

There isn't room in a CRJ for a flight engineeer, but yeah, I can't think of any major US airline that has an FE anymore. What aircraft are you on now?

C-130...is that related to the AC-130? I know I sound like a geek, but I only know it through Modern Warfare 2.

Modern Warfare kicks ass. An AC-130 is the gunship version of a C-130. A C-130 is designated by model by a letter postfix. The latest version is the C-130J, and previous models would be C-130(A-H). Most C-130s are used for cargo ops, but they make a gunship version. 'A' stands for 'Attack'.

130's, but with a twist,

google MC-130W for more info....wikipedia does OK with it,

ton of C-130 variants out there, kinda like mustang year models, and designators such as BOSS, Super Cobra Jet, GT, LX, Shelby, blah blah blah

have fun with that rebuild, I'm looking for time to mess with my parts stack in the garage....
