Engine Oil Cooler

Does anyone have the Ford Racing engine oil cooler? or any other oil cooler? Where's the best place to mount it? Any tips/pics with the install? I'm thinking about getting the Ford racing one and it's looks rather simple, but I'd like to get some advise before I get into it.

ill bump you again, as im thinking of doing one too (oil in 5.0's gets pretty hot). i think Michael and Jason (90mustanggt) run coolers, and one has a FRPP unit but i cant remember whom (i think it was Michael).

bump.

My cooler was mounted in front of the rad useing strips of flat stock but I since changed that and mounted it lower in the front end where the lower vents are in the middle and it mounts to to the lower rad support and bummper cover. You can see it at the bottom from the front if you look but inside the engine bay the rad covers it all up. You can mount it anywhere it gets air and the hoses will reach to.

was it a FRPP unit? i cant remember - is it a stacked design? do you need a thermostat?
i agree with your later mounting design. stacking 3 cores in series is not great for the radiator. i would likely mount mine as low as i could (not to get hit by stuff), and perhaps at an angle, if possible (to reduce the vertical height of the unit). sounds like you kinda did that.

folks, more info please. sounds like a few of us are curious about this. :)

Yup, I run the FRPP unit. It has a piece that bolts where your oil filter goes, and the oil filter goes on it. In the unit there is a t-stat that opens at higher temps. Two lines run to a oil cooler. It's a really beefy cooler. I run mine attached to the radiator where it gets air pulled through it by the fan. It definatly makes a difference in oil temps, I don't have a gauge but the engine stays cooler. You have to keep in mind that the coolant is limited to what it can cool, the oil is the only thing that cools the berrings and rings, ect.

I've scene units on summit and jegs that are aftermarket and probally do just as well if not better. I like the Ford unit because it came stock on the police cars, and is comparably priced and I know it is easy bolt on, which it was. Some aftermarket units have provisions for trans and oil.

I've got one as well - I'll try to include pics below. Dropped my temps from 260-270F to 210F-230F. I'd suggest mounting it down low so that the hot air coming off of it DOES NOT pass back over the a/c condenser (if you have one) or the radiator. It makes those units work that much harder. The cooler is mounted behind the low, central opening in the front air dam.

Woo Hoo first time I ever saw the Volvo. Man is that a sleeper. :nice:
Michael was kind enough to show me some pics last year or so. if you think those pics are nice, you have no idea!

wow....that volvo is one of the coolest things I have ever seen
i agree. i love his engineering feats - you know every little detail has a well engineered purpose (i bugged Michael about some of the nuances in his ride, and he was kind enough to indulge my curiosity with thoughful answers. (i.e. Hey Michael, what is that and what does it do? LOL). there is a tooshy load of cool things he has done to that car.
ive spent some time just staring at the engine compartment figuring out what stuff was for (i.e. PCV catch can took me some time). a true gentleman's sedan. :)

guys, how much is that oil cooler from ford? would it be a good one to use with a turbo kit?? I'm gonna be putting one on the car this year, probably a T76GTS.

Thanks guys - drgn - if you get in good with your local Ford dealer, you ought to be able to pick up one for a little over $100. And with a turbo heating things up you'll definitely need a cooler. Don't mount it in front of the radiator lest all that heat go right back into the cooling system.

Thanks for the info, Michael. I will definitely check into one of these when my new combo goes together.

your car looks sweet. the upper intake on your car looks like it was welded. or am i just seeing things?

I got mine at Mustangs Unlimited for about $110, somewhere around that price. I've got mine in front of the radiator, I'll move it sooner or later. I'll need to because those rubber lines that come with the kit that attach with a hose clamp, well one hose is leaking. I'll probally get some stainless hard lines and relocate. I don't know what size those threads are though.

all those coolers you guys have mentioned are the oil to air coolers rite? Because i have a oil to water cooler off a 2.3T that i was told would work with the 5.0.

To make it work i would just screw it in, screw the filter on it and then just plumb the coolants lines to and from it right?
