I was told by someone that rebuilt my motor that if you are reusing the stock crank and rods but putting new bearings in that you do not have to use a plastigauge (is this right). i'm also having some trouble getting the car exactly right i have a issue with my headers getting red hot when i idled the car at around 1600rpm to break the cam in, it was the #1 and #8 cylinder and when i idled the car down to 900 to 1k rpm the red went away the timing is at 14* and 1 more thing i drove the car down the road and when coming to a stop or coming to a idle the car will go dead but will restart fine and idle fine. can you guys help my on these problems i'm new to all of this and i'm hoping i haven't messed up.

well I have seen people just throw a set of bearings in but thats not the right way to do it. You should plastigauge all of your rod and main bearings it really don't take that much time to do.As far as your headers get red hot the timing is off.Maybe your balancer has spun and is giving you a false reading. If you get under the car and look at the back side of the balancer you maybe able to see the rubber coming out of it if so it needs to be replaced. What all do you have done to the car?

Yes your red hot headers indicate your timing is off. Fix that first. You should always plastic guage bearings. Back to your headers. You are probably retarded (timing that is not you personally). Did you set the timing with the spout connector out?

well i have trick flow h/c/i 65mm tb stock injectors and trw forged pistons and i looked at the balancer and it looks fine no rubber coming out and the timing is 14* with the spout connector out. the motor is complete and no plastigauge was used i hope the engine will last and be dependable, also i was told i would have to get a chip made before my car would ever be right is this true?

Glow headers can also be a sign of a lean condition. What is you fuel pressure set at? If your timing is good then basically fuel shouldn't be getting into your headers and burning in there. I have been told that if you are extremely rich you will get glowing headers aswell but this is usally in connection with timing retard.

See the sticky - the help for the slow to a stop and die condition is in there..

See "Help me create the Surging Idle Checklist" at http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=698148
for help with your idle problems. The first post contains all the updates to the fixes. I continue to update it as more people post fixes or ask questions.

It could be running lean like 86bluecobra said. You are really working the stock injectors hard. You combo should be making around 350hp or little more.Stock injectors are only good up untill about 300hp.
