Engine Stand Question

I'm getting ready to pull the 289 out of the '65 Coupe this coming weekend, and was wondering what bolt size I needed to mount it to a stand? I tried to search for this, and found a post saying 7/16" x 14 threads for a 5.0 block. Would it be the same for the 289? I'd just rather have everything ready than have to run out to find the correct bolts while the engine is hanging from some chains in the garage.

hey i just used the long head bolts to hold my 302 up and had no problem, i even have it complete besides the intake on it now and it is still holding. i had to use some washers and spacers though.

A 6 bolt 289 block has the exact same transmission pattern as a 5.0 block.
The 7/16" bolts are what you need.

If you feel uncomfortable with the advice provided.....just unbolt a bolt from your trans to engine. Take that bolt down to your local hardware store and match it. You are going to want bolts that are about 2.5" long also. Id go ahead and buy grade 8 too.

That length depends on his engine stand.He needs about an inch of thread more than the thickness of the stand holes.

I thought most engine stands had pretty much the same length arms and ends? I have been using the same bolts for years on different engine stands and 302 engines.

The engine stand I have has about 2" that the bolt needs to pass through. I figured I'd be safe with about a 3" Grade-8 bolt.

I don't think all engine stands are the same though. The one I'm getting ready to use is actually borrowed because mine already has an engine on it (just not a Ford engine...). I believe mine needed longer bolts...

Thanks for the info. Hopefully by the end of the weekend I'll have the engine out and on the stand.

yeah mine used 4 1/2 inch bolts. They are all different.
