Engine Stand question...

Okay, on my engine stand and I'm sure on most I have 4 arms that connect to the back of my motor. I guess I'm supposed to use the bolts I had from the tranny so mount to the engine? If so, the bolts only go part way through the arms and there's no way it will hold the motor. I know this is a stupid question but I would like to get this puppy mounted to the stand. I guess the clutch should probably come off too. It's still on the cherry picker, any tips of getting it on the stand?

I had to run to the hardware store for some grade 8 bolts to hold my engine. I wish I could give you a size, but it only took me a second to grab a quick measurement of the length needed. Other than that, there's really not much to getting it on the stand. Just be careful if you turn the engine upside down, forgetting that it had coolant left in the block

If it is a 302, the bolts are 7/16", just like the head bolts. (hint, hint) They might be too long, in which case you'd need to washers unde the bolt heads.

If you want to leave the clutch on, you'll need longer grade 8 bolts -- hardware store as instructed above.

Putting it on the stand isn't rocket science --- lower the motor on the picker until it lines up with the stand; put the 4 bolts through and tighten 'em down; gently lower the picker til the stand picks up the weight and the chain/cable goes slack; unhook it.

Be certain you get Grade 8 bolts -- broken bolts and dropping one off the stand can do all kinds of damage to body parts, engine parts and even the concrete.

I couldn't agree more. If you enjoy having your feet and toes attached, absolutely use grade 8 bolts. It may seem to be holding well without them, but when you start torquing down cylinder heads or something, and start putting more stress on the bolts, you might be able to get out of the way in time, but I wouldn't chance it.

I have used this before. Worked fine.

Yep, I use old arp head bolts to hold mine on the stand. The bolts are a bit long so you'll need a bunch of washers to space the bolts out.

Yeah, this sucks to do. I'll just leave it on the picker until I get the correct bolts. 4 bolts to hold a motor on seems like not much...

If you use grade 8, they will be plenty strong.

4 is overkill, you could hold it with 2 if you wanted.

Also, there are SAE Grade 8.2 bolts...but good luck finding those they are kinda rare.

Cap bolts are slightly stronger than Grade 8 as well.

don't over tighten the block to the stand.
