Engine upgrade finally...suggestions?

I've been wanting to do something to my car to wake it up for a while now, so I'm gonna do it over christmas while I have time. Right now I have a stock 289 that was rebuit like 6000 miles ago. Only things added are performer intake, holley 600 vac. sec. carb, and long tube headers. I have a stock, rebuilt c-4, and in the rear is a MAE Racing center section with limited slip/locker (not sure) and 3.55s. I think I want to get heads or head work, with a cam. I want to keep my same carb, exhuast, and intake, as well as find a cam that will work well with my rear gears, and hopefully not require a ridiculous converter.

First, and most important, what cam?

Now, matching with the cam, what heads? It would be nice to get assembled heads for less than $1,000 or even just get my current heads ported, but whatever....

Last, anything else that needs to go with this combo to make it optimal and matching for performance. Torque converter?

I'm on a budget and I know there are always lots of little costs that add up, so keep in mind this is a weekend street car. I just want everything to match to get the best performance....so thats it, floor is open, what do you think?

Comp 268H-270 are the biggest cams you can go with without upgrading the stall. They recommend getting one with the 270 but ive heard that you really dont need to. Get your heads ported, polished. 1.90 intake valves 1.60 exhaust. If you havent upgraded your heads/cam, your missing out on alot of power. Look into shift kits for that C-4 they will make your car shift on a more agressive level. You can have all that done, installed by yourself for far less than the 1000 your willing to spend on your heads.

performer heads, performer cam. It will give you good driveability, gas mileage, good torque down low, good hp gains in midrange and top end as well. The performer heads work good on a mild combo like yours, but leave room to grow if you go wilder in the future.
