EPA tells CARB to get bent

By itself, good news. But then there's the 35 MPG CAFE requirement in 12 years. Even the Focus has trouble meeting that, and it's probably one of Ford's most fuel efficient vehicles. It's gonna get ugly, stock up on performance cars while they still exist.

true.

new cars dont bother me too much since i likely would never buy 1. personally i dont mind waiting a few years for a car though when the new requirement hits....itll be over. im just waiting for more E85 to be available.

I remember reading an article saying the future of the Corvette depended on what the CAFE standards might be. I just don't see how they will meet the need for trucks and not change the laws of physics...

Also there is this story with Corvette's Cheif Engineer sying the same thing...

Either way the prices will go up to Posrshe levels...

They could start by requiring pickups to meet the same fuel efficiency requirements as cars when purchased by noncommercial users. The idea that a GT500 comes with a gas guzzler tax while some soccermom can go buy an Expedition for the urban jungle without paying a tax is absurd. Level the playing field a bit and people who have no need whatsoever for a big SUV may think twice before buying one. Reduce the ratio of pickups to cars, and CAFE improves.

If the Corvette goes, we're all screwed. The regular C6 gets a lot better gas mileage than any Mustang.

My focus an 03 has no problem meeting that at 65mph at 70 its hit or mostly miss.
It just gets me that after 27 yrs that the 1980 honda prelude (carbed) that my dad bought got 37 mpg.
Don`t look like cars are much better than that now, unless you buy some little japanese ****box hybrid pos.

Except CAFE isn't calculated using highway MPG, it's calculated using combined city/highway, which is about 30 for your Focus. That really brings home the kind of changes we're going to see -- they have to increase the average fuel economy of all cars by about 40%.

Well, depending on the model of Focus you have, the Prelude weighs as much as 600 pounds less (the Prelude is 2,130 lbs) ;). The same government that insists on better fuel economy also mandates much higher standards for safety than they did in 1980. Proof that you truly cannot have your cake and eat it too.

This isn't fair either. I have a F250 because I use it. I tow big stuff. Haul firewood, things like that. They are expensive enough without the tax.

I disagree ;). It's either just as fair, or just as unfair, depending on how you want to word it. Tax them all, or tax none of them. The people who want a big truck can pay the tax, just like the people who want a GT500.

One word - diesel. You will see miliage figures jump 20-30% over night when manufacturs release motors that will burn low sulfur diesel. Implement bio diesel and clean the environment too. Diesel hybrid is going to go along way toways fuel economy. Image using just electricty in the city, then the diesel for the highway where it was designed to be. My golf, at 3300lbs got over 50mpg with an automatic box at over 75mph on long trips.
