first, no the engine doesn't even have a lifter tick nor does it nock or anything. I have an old stock H-pipe with God knows how many miles, it's all dented out of shape too. Anyway it makes the ugliest sound at times, it's as if I lost a couple of bolts in there or something. It will produce that sound when the engine is off and I hit it with a small hammer at times too. I'm waiting on a deal for a new H-pipe with only 2 cats... I'm just curious if anyone has had that problem with a stock H-pipe before.

Also what are the symptons for clogged cats?

Before you go scrapping your cats, take a trip down to your local muffler shop and have the heat shields cut off of the cats (or you can do it yourself). They're spot welded and all it takes is for one or two of the welds to pop before it starts rattling like an old Gremlin. If you've still got the noise after that's done then do what the others have suggested above.

I've got some rattle in my exhaust, it sounds like the piping is hitting the floor pan. I don't have cats on my car, so it can't be that, any solutions?

Yup, same thing happened to mine this year. Darn heat shield weld on the top of one of the cats rusted through. It would clank on down the street, very annoying. A quick fix was a big hose clamp until I can get it tack welded.

yeah the cats are shot...either pieces broke off inside and are bouncing around or the heat shield is shot. My guess would be since its the original cats that they are no good. Also one of the clamps that is on the actual H pipe on mine came loose and caused the same sound so check that too.

Well one heat shield did have a broken weld, ripped off the shield, and it still sounds like poo. I hate it, putting a new off-road H-pipe this weekend, the only problem is that I'll need mufflers now (no mufflers with the cats sound okay) *sigh*...

Besides I think the car this H-pipe came from has been in a wreck... it has A LOT of dents and one of the pipes has a flat and kinked bottom lol...
