You can, I dont see any point of doing it on a stocker, its not going to really help you at all. Ive heard its actually bad to do it unless you have a shift kit, but I did it now and then with my old 5.0. It was an auto, but I liked having some control over the powerband.
I know for those you pretty much had to manually shift to get and hold 2nd for any time if you were dragging. You had to start out in 1st, then shift to D and bang it right back into one and the engine would stay in seond until you wanted to shift again to D. I doubt you would still have to do that with todays AOD trannys though.
