Hey everyone,

I just bought new rotors, drums, pads and shoes for my 1970 coupe.

My question, what else do I need to replace all the above? Gaskets, bolts, special tools, etc.? I'm a total newbie here and after looking through the Haynes manual it seems like I'm missing a few parts, but I just can't figure out exactly which ones.

The pads, shoes, etc. didn't come with any fasteners or anything. If you need a photo of anything to determine what else I need, I can post those, too.

Also, after I install anything, do I need to use brake cleaner on all the parts first? Or should I use brake cleaner before installing anything?

Thanks in advance
Ian

Clean everything after you get it apart. Clean the backing plates. Lube the spots on the backing plates where the shoes rub against them. Buy new spring and hold down kits. Buy two new tools, one is the tool that installs and removes the cups on the hold down springs, and the other is the tool for removing and installing the springs mounted on the top post. They are available at Autozone for barely ten bucks for the pair.

Maybe if you're putting on new rotors for the front you might want new bearings as well, unless your old ones are in good shape.

What kind of lube do I use? For cleaning, can I just spray everything down with brake cleaner?

So... lube, spring and hold down kits, bearings and 2 tools.
Anything else?

Get the new grease seals too for those new bearings, front and rear.

Last few times I have done drums, the lube came in a little packet with the spring kits.

A little more info would help.
Why the drums and rotors? are they past turning?
What about the wheel cyl and calipers.
Brake line hoses and springs and retainers.
And as prev mentioned bearings and seals.

The drums and rotors can't be turned anymore, and the pads and shoes are completely worn down. Not exactly very safe.

Should I just replace the springs, retainers, etc. while I'm in there? I dont know the last time they've been replaced. Maybe I can take a photo and see what you guys think...

Also, if I buy a 10x2 brake drum will that fit if the one on the car is 10x1 3/4? Or is there more involved in changing the drum size?

Lastly, which tools do I need exactly? I was looking through Kragen.com and they have a million different brake tools...

Thanks!
Ian

So I've managed to find the spring and hold down kits and the tools, but I can't find a place to buy the bearings and seals.

Any ideas?
