i have a 2001 v6 and recently got into the exhaust thing. i installed mac long tubes with custom mid pipes going straight back (not x or h, just straight), no cats, roush side exit exhaust. i just got the car back today and it sounds like a honda civic with a fartcan on it and i do not know what to do. i just don't have all of the knowledge of everything to fix this and make it sound a bit more muscle-like. my first guess is that the mufflers are no good and i need to get new ones. the mufflers on there now are roush and i bought them from a guy who took them off of a '99 gt. any help to get the sound better would be really appreciated. thanks in advance.

V6s are always going to have a bit of a ricer-ish sound to it. That's due to an even firing order. I have magnaflows and the sound isnt too obnoxious.

I have a MAC cat-back on mine and I'm really pleased with the sound. The car starts to sound a little like rice at WOT, but at idle and takeoff, several people have mistaken it for a V8. I don't think it's done anything for the performance either positive or negative, but it sounds good.

after driving it the past couple of days, it's not as bad as i initially thought. once it gets around 3400 RPMs, it starts to really scream like a rice burner, especially when i am getting on it pretty good. from idle to that, it doesn't sound too bad, which i guess is good for me since it will save me fuel. . but, i talked to a guy today and he said glasspacks and/or magnaflow mufflers would deepen the tone quite a bit, but i'm debating (after the last 3 weeks of waiting and around $200 spent putting the roush stuff on) taking off the roush exhaust/side skirts, selling that, buying flowmaster super 44's or super 40's (and stock skirts of course). would this be the better option for the muscle-ish sound i'm looking for???

Steppin on it or getting on it really good does nothing for fuel. Expect no more than possibly 1 to 2 mpg gain from mufflers. But again, that's if you don't pound it. Mufflers usually cause more pedal mashing than usual.

Other than that, leave the roush tips and side skirts, just change the mufflers.

but getting on it does shove more fuel into the engine, and since it's better below 3K, it will do a little better on gas compared to going to 3800-4200K to shift.

You need an H pipe, that will help in giving you a much better sound.

On my 99 Mustang I put on a Flowmaster catback and I am always asked whats under the hood. It sounds like a V8 with a mild exhaust. I like it anyway.

Use smaller pipes. With a v6 using smaller pipes will give u a deeper tone
