my friend has a 99 v6 stang and it sounds like it has an exhaust leak but you can only hear it when you are driving it. if your sitting still you cant hear the tick whether you are at idle or rev it up. are the v6's like the v8's where only one of the collectors have a gasket or does both of them? i also read something that said the egr tube can crack and make a tick sound. could it be the egr tube? sorry for the long thread and thanks for your guys help.

Another possibility for an engine "tick" sound is the spark plugs backing out. The usual recommendation is to re-torque the spark plugs to be sure.
Yes it is possible that a cracked EGR tube could be the source of an exhaust leak.
A mechanic’s stethoscope may provide some help.
Another option is to take it to a muffler shop for an assessment (estimate). The guys doing this for a living may be able to spot a leak you can’t. This may give some more information to go on.
