Exhaust modification question.........

Ill start off by saying that my mustang is my daily driver. But now that I have become addicted to the strip (hello, my name is Will, and I am a drag-junkie), I would like to benefit from the gains that can be found freeing up the exhaust. But I dont want to shatter eardrums/wake the dead/attract law enforcement/ on a daily basis. Sooooooo........

I want to keep the stock exhaust on during daily driving....and go basicly straight headers at the track. Other than being terribly loud, I dont see why this should be a problem. Right?

I ask this because Im working on fabricating an adjustable exhaust dump(for the lack of better name) that welds in somewhere in the front of the midpipe. So, when I get to the track, get under the car, open the dump and close off the exhaust, and line up. I have not decided on a final design as of yet. I guess I just mant to make sure that horrible noise is the only downside to this.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks for any input!:nice:

Hmm, honetly I think some LTs...O/R X or H, and a magnaflow catback would actually give more power. From what I hear, an LTs with an X pipe actually makes more power than just open headers (or a cutout). My car really isnt all that loud due to the magnaflows...if you went with a catted SLP X pipe, it would be almost as quiet as stock lol. But ALOT more power that you have ALL the time...not just at the track :).

I know the stock exhaust doesnt sound bad, but once you get some exhaust...you wont want to go back to the stock sound. It took me a long time to want to ditch the stock exhaust, because I liked it....same with the stock shifter. But once you get the aftermarket parts, you will love it :nice: .

$500 for BBK ceremic LTs
$450 for catted X (maybe magnaflows)
$350 Magnaflow CB

I see. My problem with aftermarket exhausts is that I LOVE the SLP stuff. I had originally planned on getting the LT's, shorty offroad x, and the LM or LMII catback...(I think I fell in love with the tips!)...probably the loudest setup!:rlaugh:

Plus my wife doesnt want me to have another loud car. I dont know. Will an x pipe with stock catback still net decent gains?

Edit: Is there a way to make a LT header, x pipe, and catback REASONABLY less earsplitting with out drone? I do not like drone....and with these 4.10's im cruising @ 2500+rpms, may be un avoidable

Hmm well SLP LTs, SLP catted X, and a magnaflow catback would be very quiet. SLP LM2s wouldnt be that bad either. LM1s would be loud even with cats. But thats a pretty pricey exhaust lol.

I know! Their LT's are so stinkin expensive.

$720 for SLP LT's
$300 for SLP shorty catted X
$360 for SLP LMII catback

Are the MAC LT's worth a darn? How does the SLP "power-flo" mufflers stack, in terms of power, to the LM & LMII?

$350 for MAC LT's
$300 for SLP shorty catted X
$360 for SLP LMII or PowerFlo

much better;)

Ill try searching too......

I would not worry about longtubes until you're making some more power. I would however do the exhaust. if you want a quiet aftermarket exhaust and still see some gains, i would go with a catted mac prochamber and a regular magnaflow catback. it will not be loud at all, maybe only a few decibels above your stock setup. running open headers at the track would probably HURT you to be honest, your engine will have no backpressure whatsoever, and you're not making enough power for that. you will lose so much low end torque i wouldn't be suprised to see your times rise. just get the setup i mentioned about and you will see some nice gains, and it will sound very good and not loud at all. hope this helps

Thank you. Ill consider that.:nice: My thinking was if im going to go with LT's and a shorty x eventually, might as well get it up front rather than have to buy a prochamber, then replace it.....SO MANY OPTIONS!!!!!!......i dunno what im gonna do:shrug: :rlaugh:

ehh, I reccomened doing LTs first if you EVER plan on adding them. Otherwise your just throwing away money IMHO. I wish i would have gotten LTs right from the get go. They dont decrese lowend torque, they give a BIG boost in mid range-topend. I dont see them hurting a stock 96 NPI GT...muchless a 99+.

Macs seem ok, but if your going to do it...you better off doing it right the first time :nice:
