Exhaust preference

I'm itching to put an axleback on my GT, and have listened to hundreds of clips of different combinations. I have pretty much narrowed it down to 2, either Flowmaster or MAC. I always liked how Flowmaster stuff sounds, but on these smaller engines, it seems to sound a bit too "tinny". The MAC seems to sound very similar, but without the tinnyness. So I am leaning more towards MAC. I was just wondering, which of these two is generaly louder? And they are both significantly louder than stock, I assume? Is there any performance difference between the two (I don't expect the axlebck to make any difference whatsoever anyway)?

I also have considered the SLP Loudmouth. I like how it sounds from the clips, but am a bit skeptical. For one, I don't see a set of tips with no muffler being worth $320. but also, it seems like they backfire and crackle a lot more than other combos. Is this true, or are they the same in that respect? And just how loud are they? My brother has an LS1 Camaro with an SLP loudmouth catback, and it is way too loud. But it also has an offroad Y-pipe, longtubes, and a lot of other work to make almost 370 horsepower at the wheels, so I don't expect my Mustang to be THAT loud.

So I guess I am torn between 3 choices. Other then the questions I already asked, what is everyone's general opinion between the 3 on an otherwise stock car? Do either of them have an appreciable annoying drone? And lastly, is there anyone in the Chicago area that has a car with any exhaust combo that'd wanna let me hear the car in person? Thanks for any input!

im thinking i might wanna go with a more "exotic" type sound on these cars but

no slp for me just a bit loud with out a great sound imo... maybe when i was 20 they would be more appealing?
camaros just dont sound the same either way

sound clips on you tube free reving is kinda just not the same as in person

i like flows over macs most of the time

more horsepower always sounds better:SNSign:

SLP loudmouths and a catted x can get raspy same with Mac or Flows.. It will come down to ..WHAT MID PIPE ARE YOU GOING TO RUN..?? O/R H with corsa ...= SEX, very $$$$$, but its exotic... each to his own... start looking for used stuff, I picked my SLP for 120 used ...and the catted x for 200used ... Buy used so if you change your mind you dont regret shelling out all that cash !

For now I am keeping stock midpipe, so I want something that will sound good with the stock pipe. When I do change it, I would probably stick with an H. I can't stand that "exotic" raspy sound that X pipes make. Makes the car sound like it has a tiny engine like a Ferrari or something, not like a muscle car.

Roush Off-Roads. Great sound...to me. If anything, they are a bit loud but liveable unless you are using your Mustang as a DD. I'm not.

I don't care for the raspy sound. It's the deep mellow sound of a V-8 that I too prefer. If I could find a mod that would give me a deeper tone without a raspy tin sound that complimented my Flowmaster AT's, I'd probably do it. I'm more interested in the melody of my exhaust than performance gains.

I like the sound of the stock catback, so for now I'm keeping that and going with LT headers and an O/R-H to see how that sounds. I thinking it should be pretty good.

The SLP Loudmouths do crackle and pop quite a bit if you just sit there and rev with no load. Normal driving next to nothing. They sound fantastic under load. They are loud, but not nearly as loud as I expected given that it is no mufflers. Speak to someone standing outside your car and they may disagree, but from inside its really not bad at all.

I do agree that in general, it wouldn't be worth $320 for basically tips. I think I got mine for like $275ish shipped, but I can't remember for sure. But consider this - if you want to go the no muffler route, you'll probably want to convert it back to stock before selling it. Its hard to sell a car with no mufflers unless you find someone like us, which is actually the minority. If you have a shop weld a straight section of pipes and a pair of tips, it'll still cost you around $80-120. You have two options at that point: 1. Cut your factory exhaust before the mufflers so you can bolt on the straight sections, OR 2. Just weld in the pipes without the ability to bolt on/off. Factor in the cost to return it to stock and you are nearly at the same point, if not spending more. Plus, you can resell the SLP's when you are done.

Your best bet no matter what you do though is to try to find someone in person that has the exhaust setup you are considering. Go to a Mustang show, local Mustang club, etc. Most sound clips online are recorded with garbage equipment, and beyond that, few of us have sound systems to accurately replicate a good sound recording.

I had a shop attach a set of 18" X 4" chrome tips in the same manner as the stock mufflers. It is then a simple bolt on process to change back to stock. Nothing on the stock pipes was changed. Cost, $80.00. Love the sound.

I have the flows on my '06, and I love them! Nothing but copliments on the sound, too!
(stock h-pipe, and manifolds, too)

It's not raspy at all, there's no drone at cruise, and they are just loud enough to make you shift at a higher rpm, than you would've with the stock muffs, just because it sounds so sweet up there!
Just make sure you buy new ones, and not used, as there are many floating around still, from the bad original batch that was reworked in late '05. (the ones with the baffles coming loose from their welds)

Hmm, I am now starting to really like the sound of the Pypes Violator (from the internet clips). It sounds really mean, and the price is right. I'm just not sure if I like the tips. How do they look compared to other brands? And I have no experience with Pypes, is there stuff high quality? Anyone know where it is made? And lastly, does the Violator drone like the MACs?

I went to a local muffler shop and had them weld in Magnapacks with a 14" long body and 4" round about 6" behind the H pipe. They finished off the rear with stainless and some Maganaflow tips for around $350. At first the sound was good but the volume was a little disappointing. After about 500 miles the volume fixed itself and the sound improved also. Yea I know this is worthless without sound clips.

I just installed the Ford Racing GTA's and love them. I had MBRP's on there before and could not stand the drone. I don't ever plan on taking off the factory converters with this car and the GTA's sound great with absolutely no drone whatsoever.

I have the Violators. For the price, you can't beat them. They're very agressive and deep. The tips look nice. The only complaint is that there is not drain hole in the tips or mufflers, so you may want to drill some. I experienced slight drone from about 1800-2100 with the stock h pipe, and no drone with off road H pipe. Most other Violator owners report the same. A few people have had drone and fitment issues. Those are very much in the minority of Violator owners.

I will also say that with an off road pipe, they are EXTREMELY loud. I have the Cervini's side exhaust with off road x pipe on the '05, and my Violators and off road H are considerably louder.

currently I have mac axle back and o/r x-pipe and the car gets plenty of compliments for the way it sounds but for me it's a bit too raspy...i've been listening to clips of the mid muffler system and I think i'm going to try that route...but the mac's did sound nice with the stock hpipe just too quiet for me.
