My dad and I were looking under the car to look for pinholes in the exhaust system, and we came to a startling discovery... The previous owner cut out the mufflers and welded in straight pipes.

Is that legal? Also, what does it do to the powerband? It feels like the cobra doenst pull quite as hard from 6100-6700 rpms, but it still moves pretty fast. Can anyone recommend a good catback that sounds similar, but quieter at freeway speeds?

Also, I found an 03 cobra with 7k miles that is advertising stock pully and just a K&N Gen IIFIPK and a magnaflow catback with predator tune, and making 432/405 at the wheels (Dynojet). Is that high for those mods, or does it sound like it was one of the stronger cobras stock?

Your current exhaust probably meets smog requirements, but as for passing a noise ordinace without the mufflers I couldn't say. It shouldn't affect the powerband to the point where you could feel it.

As for a cat-back to replace the hacked setup you currently have... you can ask 5 people and get 5 different answers. All the major cat-back's for the 03/04 Cobra offerpretty much the same gains as far as power is concerned, but sound is subjective. What sounds good to me may sound like ass to you. Personally I like my Magnaflow system, and the Bassani cat-back is a good one too.

The 432/405 rating on the other Cobra you mention is a tad higher than average, but not much. I have full exhaust, FIPK, and a tune and I made 437/420.
