So lately, I have noticed that when driving my 82 hatch, with the windows open, I get an exhaust smell. Its a non ac car, It has a 302, C4, 410 axle, and old mid length headers. It has short pipes and two Flowmaster 40s that dump before the axle. Just put new plugs in all the body holes.

Did not remember this from driving the car a couple years back.

Is this normal with dumps, or am I missing something. I really dont want to add tail pipes, if I dont have to.

It’s the smell of non-emissions victory my man.

Tail pipes will help but sitting and idling you will still smell it.

All this talk about fumes is the cabin got me to think'n, I don't have cats, (our last two died of old age ) and never smelled fumes inside the Junk Pyle at any time......maybe it was the loose spark plugs that made it run lean? Always had a lean code
There's the answer!!! Anybody experiencing fumes just loosen up those spark plugs and it will go away

Don't count for two reasons, it's carb'd and a Dodge
And it's kinda cruel. Funny but cruel.

Is there a vapor/sound deadener barrier behind the rear seats of coupes? I am thinking of adding one behind the seats and up over the rear package tray to try and mitigate any fumes that may be coming over from the trunk. I also have no cats (with tailpipes) and the smell stays in my clothes sometimes....

I doubt that will help much.
I'm considering cats now. We'll see how it goes.
I wonder what my dog thinks of that??

You can check to see if any of the seam sealer has broken loose from old age and repair that as it will help. If you are smelling it with the windows up then you have a leak or leaks somewhere. If its with the windows down then you have found your problem...

Thanks guys. Kinda figured its my combo of dumped exhaust, sketchy header to pipe gaskets and such.
Thinking of making new , welded exh pipes anyway.

Drove it 20 miles to Cars and Coffee Sat, with the windows up and the heater in use, mostly cool, and no problems. Looking at my back yard parts car for its tailpipes...
